Doris Bonner Obituary

Doris Anne (neé Bell) Bonner passed away in her home in Virginia Beach on December 20, 2020. She was born March 25, 1932 in Red Jacket, WV, the daughter of S. Dennis and Dorris Bell. She married Neil H. Bonner in 1957 and they had one son, Neil Henry Bonner III, during their thirty-one years of marriage. A graduate of Magnolia High School in Matewan, WV, she later attended Westhampton College and James Madison University. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach.

Doris loved gardening and playing with her beloved schnauzer, Jojo. She was dedicated to community service and the arts, serving as docent with Chrysler Museum, Virginia Stage Company, and the Coast Guard Museum. Professionally, she served as a successful realtor with William E. Wood, where she especially enjoyed working with young married couples who were just starting their lives together.

She is survived by her son as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends. She will be truly missed by all. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Haney and William, and by her sister, Mary Glenn.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a Remembrance Service is tentatively planned for Spring 2021. To honor her love of animals, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA.

Doris Bonner was a wonderful person. We came to know her in 1985 when we moved to Virginia Beach she sold us our first home here. Meeting her for the first time was amusing to me, since my mother’s maiden name was also Doris Bonner! She had the most engaging personality and my children loved her! And could she ever laugh! We enjoyed every moment we spent with her, while looking for a house and throughout the process of purchasing one. We stayed in touch with her afterwards and she would call from time to time. When my son passed away unexpectedly, she came to the services and comforted every member of my family. When we decided to sell our home and buy another, we reached out to her. Doris wasn’t available since she was working as a site agent, so she referred us to a colleague. We are saddened by her loss, and we will pray for her family. Rest In Peace, Doris.
