Edmond Johnson Obituary

Edmond H. Johnson, Jr. passed away at home on March 14, 2023. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 18, 1931 to the late Judge Edmond H. Johnson and Rose Irwin Johnson, both of Snow Hill, Maryland. Ed was raised in Baltimore and Ocean City, Maryland and graduated from McDonogh School, where he lettered in football, basketball, and lacrosse. After McDonogh, he attended Duke University and was on the Duke lacrosse team.

He married his beloved wife, Jody, on December 27, 1952 in Baltimore while serving in the United States Coast Guard. In 1953 he marched in a Coast Guard unit in the inaugural parade in Washington, DC for President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He later served on the Coast Guard Cutter Cherokee, an oceangoing search and rescue tug out of Norfolk, Virginia.

After his discharge from the Coast Guard in 1956, he worked for Sears and Standard Office Supply in Norfolk before going to work for WTAR Radio as account executive in 1963. He retired from WTAR and WLTY Radio in 1990 as the National and Regional Sales Manager after 27 years.

Ed was active in a number of civic and social organizations and was a past President of the Virginia Beach Exchange Club and served as Chairman of the Norfolk Academy Annual Giving Fund from 1973-1974. He was also a past member of the Norfolk Sports Club and the Princess Anne Country Club.

Ed had many hobbies over the years, including traveling, music, reading, bird watching, tennis, sailing, and power boating, but most of all he enjoyed being with his wife and family.

He and Jody sailed for years out of Deltaville, Virginia on their sailboats, WINDSEEKER, and later, PEREGINE, and chartered several times in the Caribbean. In addition to sailing, they also enjoyed boating and fishing on their power boat, the JODY J.

Ed was preceded in death by his daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Wood, of Virginia Beach. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 70 years, Jody; two sons: Edmond H. Johnson III (Kirby) of Virginia Beach and Richard Mark Johnson (Terese) of Atlantic Beach, Florida; four grandchildren: Hough Johnson IV, Allie Johnson Jones, Perry Wood, Jr., and Alexander Johnson Wood.

A memorial service and burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Galilee Church.

Hough - Sorry to read about your father's death. Appears he lived a lengthy and activity-filled life, but the loss is still painful. Condolences to you and Kirby.

Dear Jody
I am so sorry to learn of Ed´s passing. Ed and I were business associates for many years at WTAR Radio. You and Ed were always so very kind to Mary and me. My best to you and your entire family.
