Elisabeth L. Chambers Burgess

Norfolk - Elisabeth Lacy Chambers Burgess, 80, died Sunday, June 11, 2017. She was the wife of Charles Owen Burgess and daughter of the late Roberta Strudwick Chambers and Lenoir Chambers. She was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia, and was a graduate of The Graham School and Sweet Briar College.

She was a news reporter for The Ledger-Star, a bank manager for First Virginia Bank (now BB&T), business manager and executive director for Early Works (now Children's Harbor), and after retirement worked as a part-time tax preparer.

She was a member of The Monday Club, the Great Bridge Chapter of the DAR, and a sustaining member of the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach. She was active in the theater most of her adult life, first with the Little Theatre of Norfolk, then as one of the co-founders of the Norfolk Theater Center (parent of what is now the Virginia Stage Company), and for many years as a board member of the Generic Theater.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: daughter, Elisabeth Owen Burgess and her husband, Ehsan Kattoula, and one grandchild, Leila Burgess-Kattoula; son Charles Lenoir Burgess and his wife, Kerstin Michaelsen Burgess and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Strudwick Glenn and his wife, Carolyn Myers Glenn.

A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, June 16, 2017 in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. A reception will follow at Harbors Edge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lenoir Chambers Scholarship at Norfolk Academy or the Harbors Edge Foundation.
