Elizabeth Leitch Obituary

Elizabeth Kidman Leitch

Virginia Beach - Elizabeth "Betty" Kidman Leitch passed away on April 13, 2014. Mrs. Leitch was born in South Australia, Australia on February 14, 1921.

She was a graduate of the University of Adelaide and served her country in World War II as a member of the Australian Air Force. In Melbourne, she met John "Jack" D. Leitch, Jr. while he was on assignment with the United States Navy. After the war, they were married in Adelaide and Betty came to the United States on a "war bride" ship.

Betty was a championship tennis player, having won the Virginia state singles and doubles titles two consecutive years in the early 1950's. She was a member of the Princess Anne Garden Club and she was active with CHKD. She was an accomplished mahjong player and an avid gardener. Most of all, she was a gracious, intelligent and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

She was predeceased by her husband of nearly sixty years. She is survived by her son, John D. Leitch, III, her daughter, Robin Leitch Tolerton, her grandchildren, Russell L., Jonathan K., Elizabeth W., and Shelley R. L. Tolerton, one great-granddaughter, Erin N. Tolerton, her brother, James Kidman, and her sister, Alexandra Kidman, both of South Australia.

A memorial service will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church on Friday, April 18, at 4 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to CHKD.

What a wonderful woman in whom I had great respect. We daily shared her dining table these past two plus years (following the passing of my stepdad), and I always brought her ice cream or Wendy's Frosties when I brought them for my own Mom. Ms. Betty had become very special to me! She was such a fine lady!!
