Va Beach - Francisca Barnebo Vergonio, 76, passed away on January 13, 2017, after her valiant fight against breast cancer.

Francisca, known as Frances to her family and many friends, was born in Pilar Bataan, Philippines and spent a lifetime caring for others as a registered nurse and a devoted caretaker of her family. As a young and academically precocious student, her teacher, Mrs. Lourdes Aranas opened her home to Frances. She adopted Frances into her family which enabled Frances to continue her education. After graduating as her high school's valedictorian, Frances attended Far Eastern University. She worked hard to support herself through college and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, majoring in accounting. Frances married her beloved husband Teodoro, an enlisted sailor in the U.S. Navy, after which they emigrated to the United States. Frances pursued additional academic endeavors returning to school to become a registered nurse.

Frances was well-loved throughout her life as an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and as an ever-willing volunteer at her church, local hospitals and other community organizations. Her grace, compassion, positive energy and ever-present smile even during her fight against cancer brightened everyone who had the blessing to meet and know Frances.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of over 52years, Teodoro J. Vergonio; a son, James Vergonio of Virginia Beach; three daughters, Mary Ann DuRant and her husband, Eddie, of Virginia Beach, Merlinda Vergonio of Virginia Beach, and Maricel Villanueva and her husband Lejandro, of Leesburg, VA; and three grandchildren, Skylar, Isabella, and Nathaniel.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, from 6 to 9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2017, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church by Rev. Fr. Merlito Abiog. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Holy Spirit Catholic Church or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
