Gail Helmick Obituary
Chesapeake - Gail Bentley Helmick, 59, of Chesapeake, VA, peacefully passed away Wednesday September 17th, 2014 at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk, VA. Gail is survived by her husband of 38 years, Walter Helmick Jr, two children Michael Helmick and Ashley Griffin and six Grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Wayne Bentley of Ashville, North Carolina and Sue Broderick of Hazlet, New Jersey. She was predeceased by her son, Ryan Helmick. Gail worked as a financial technician at the DFAS & Military Sealift Command and dedicated herself to her country for over 20 years.
A memorial service organized by the family will be held at the family residence in Chesapeake, VA on Saturday September 20, 2014 between 6-8 PM. In lieu of floral arrangements, the family requests that donations be made in Gail's name to the American Diabetes Association.

I worked with Gail for ten years at the NNSY and on the Naval Base. My first day at the shipyard, Gail took me over to the clinic to get a handicapped parking permit. Then, every evening, for ten years, Gail would go and get my van from the parking lot and bring it around to the front door for me so I wouldn't have to walk so far. I never had to ask for her to help. We always spent time chatting before leaving. I will miss those talks.

I am grateful to Gail & the whole Helmick family for helping me through one of the hardest times in my life and for making me feel like family. Gail was very special to me and I'll always remember her for her sarcastic sense of humor, giggle, & ability to tell it like it is. Most of all she will be cherished for being such a spectacular grandmother to Bailey. My condolences and love to you all.

Gail had an enormous, caring heart. Additionally, she had a wit unsurpassed. I also recall her love of ODU Women's Basketball Team. It makes me very sad to hear of her passing - much too soon - yet when I think of Gail, I smile. My prayers and thoughts are with her family.

Though many years our lives were apart, I was fortunate to speak with you on the phone when you called your dear brother, Wayne, while I was visiting in Asheville a few months ago. You sounded just like yourself. I expected no less from a genuine, kind, and and sweet person who loved unconditionally which is a trait many can not claim in a lifetime. I am so sorry. I cannot even believe this and to be honest, I am not handling it very well. I love Gail forever and always and I just can't express in words how much I will miss her. My heart breaks for Junior, Ashley, Michael, Logan and the other grandchildren who will not get to know her the way I did. Her humor was contagious and her heart was always open to anyone in need. I will miss you, Gailie, more than you could ever know.

I am shocked and saddened by the loss of my dear friend Gail Bentley Helmick. I have not seen her very much since I moved to Birmingham but she is a huge part of my memories in childhood and adolescence. She lived practically in our backyard and we were either at her house or mine! I loved her deeply and will miss her deeply. I introduced her to her husband 38 years ago. It is hard to believe. My deepest sympathy goes out to her beloved husband Junior and her children.

To the Helmicks, I truly will miss Gail, we lived in the same neighborhood. But I didn't get the pleasure of meeting her until we were in our 20's. Gail did make you laugh and what a special friend she was.There was a few of us girls that hung together , I can't even begin to tell you how much fun we had and even got into some trouble. But we all did grow up and remained friends. Although I never saw much of Gail after we all settled down. I knew she would be there for me at anytime. I know God must of put you in my path because I learned that nothing else matters but God and family. Gail was only herself and that's something that a lot of us can't say. I will miss you dearly and you have left us with memories that we will never forget. See ya in the big sky! Loveyou!

Gail had a huge heart, sarcastic wit and never met a stranger. I had the good fortune of meeting the most fun loving girls back in 1974 when I moved here. Gail being one of them! I also had the good fortune of reuniting with my dear friend when I took a job at the Military Sealift Command. I will miss you my dear friend!!

No words can express the sadness we have for the loss of our dear Gail. I met Gail while searching for a friend in my new neighborhood in the 4th grade. Found her in her yard and we were inseparable after that. Went thru everything together- the good and the bad, and got each other through every single step of life with our identical sense of humor and our contagious gift of laughter that we shared with everyone we came across. SO many memories, so many friends. So much love. Gonna miss you, Gail. Enjoy the view until I see you again on Cloud 9.

I'm really going to miss Gail. She was someone special and always was light-hearted and warm towards me, always supportive and encouraging. It was easy to love her and I felt loved by her. One thing I know she respected is family: her family and others family as well. She always asked how mine was doing and to wish them well. Gail was my sidekick since the 4th grade.We went through everything together until we were married and had our own families, but still managed to visit now and then and keep in touch. She kept us all laughing. Always had that great sense of humor and kept me smiling all the time. Gail will be greatly missed by so many, but we know we will see her again one day.
