George Meyers Obituary

George W. Meyers Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - George William Meyers Sr. passed away Aug. 11, 2009, in Port Orange, Fla. He was born in Pittsburgh Feb. 3, 1918. He retired from Bay Village High School in Ohio after 30 years of teaching math and industrial arts. George and his wife, Sarah "Sally" Murray enjoyed a long retirement, moving to Virginia Beach and traveled to more than 30 different Elderhostels throughout the United States. He was an avid golfer and volunteered as a golf marshal for years. He also enjoyed making earrings and gave hundreds of pairs away. In his later years, they moved to Spotsylvania, Va., and lived there for five years. Following some health problems, he moved to Florida and was cared for by his grandson, Dan Filkins and his wife Mearlene. George and Sally raised three children. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years and his daughter, Winifred "Winnie" Marie (Meyers) Ridill, who also taught at Bay Village for many years before moving to Virginia Beach to teach English there until her death in 2003. He is survived by one sister; children, George Meyers Jr. and Pamela Meyers, both of Virginia; sons-in-law, Jack Ridill and Bill Rowland; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and "adopted" daughter, Marjorie Welsh. A private memorial and burial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Bay Village High School Booster Club by sending a check to: Bay Rockets Association, P.O. Box 40128, Bay Village, OH 44140.
