George Moody

Portsmouth - George Wesley Moody, 79, went to be with the Lord on Monday evening, March 6, 2017 at the Commonwealth Assisted Living House, Portsmouth, VA in the company of his family and a host of angels.George was born September 24, 1937, to the late George Washington Moody and the late Mrs. Lucy M. Walker Moody Overton. He was predeceased by his stepfather, Mr. John E. Overton, Sr., his stepmother, Mrs. Jeanette Moody, and his sister, Mrs. Phyllis Moody Angus.

"Coach Moody" as he was affectionately known, graduated from I.C. Norcom High School and Virginia State University. At both institutions, Coach Moody served as teacher, instructor, mentor, football coach and track record-setter. He gave freely of his time, wisdom and education to the young people who crossed his path. George was a generous man known fondly by classmates, athletes and family as a "good Samaritan" He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Dr. Lessie Preston Moody, daughter, Shajuan Moody Evans (Aaron), Chesapeake; son, Erik M. Moody (Ebony), Phoenix, Arizona; three grandchildren, Crystal E.Evans, Portsmouth, Brandy N. Evans,Chesapeake, and Aaron "Marcus" Evans, Houston, TX; three sisters, Dr. Doris A.Overton, Norfolk; Deloris Overton Short (Alonzo), Portsmouth; and Barbara Moody Mills (Linwood), Portsmouth; two brothers, John E. Overton, Jr. (Yvonne),Portsmouth; and William Moody (Tina), Corpus Christi, TX; a host of nieces,nephews, cousins, former students, colleagues, and loved ones.The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 12, 2017, at Zion Baptist Church, 225 Hatton St., Portsmouth, Virginia, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m. An Omega Memorial Service will be held at the church from 5:30 to 6:00p.m. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017,11:00 a.m., at Zion Baptist Church, Dr. Kelvin E. Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake, Virginia.Condolences may be offered to the family at www.fisherfuneral.com/obituary.Fisher Funeral 1520 Effingham.

This one hurts...
Coach Moody inspired me in so many ways to become the man I am today. I played quarterback for him at Elizabeth City State University. He was more then a Coach and more like the father I never had. He has been that person in my life who helped me make those life changing decisions. After college we would talk often. My family would visit he and Dr. Lessie Moody and they treated my wife, kids like family. He was Heaven sent to a small town kid who he always inspired and encouraged to always do your personal best in all endeavors in life. Going to miss the you Coach. Forever Greatful

To the entire family; I offer my prayers and condolences. George was one of my earliest influences to become a runner. He watched me and the other boys racing up and down Hobson Street. Once he saw I could keep up with the guys who were 4,5years older than I, he began to encourage me. I was in elementary school at the time. I ran all the time after that. I later went on to Virginia State, where I ran for the same Coach that George had, William "Pete" Bennett, who also grew up in Portsmouth. I will always appreciate! what George did for me and remember him with fondness.

George and I were football teammates at Virginia State University for several years. He was always a class act, a very decent person and a true gentleman. On several of my visit to the university after my graduation, he treated me like a king. I will miss him much.
