Hazel Free Obituary
Chesapeake - Hazel M. Free, 90, of the 1100 block of Woodland Terrace Dr., passed away in her home early Saturday morning, March 25, 2017, after a short illness. She was born in Ayden, NC on October 2, 1926. She was predeceased by her parents, Roy H. McLawhorn and Myrtie Bell McLawhorn; her husband of nearly 64 years, Raymond M. Free, Sr.; her daughter, Susan F. Roberson; and her sisters, Mary M. Little and Frances M. Bray.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Linda D. Free of Chesapeake; son, Raymond M. Free, Jr. (wife Nan) of Durham, NC; brother, Dalton McLawhorn (wife Frances) of Seaford, VA; sister, Annice M. Crist (husband Charles) of Yorktown, VA; son-in-law, William A. Roberson of Bear Grass, NC; grandchildren, Niklaus M. Free (Jenna Greiss) of Denver, CO; Judith F. Jawhar (husband Gihad) of Mooresville, NC; John M. Free (wife Sarah) of Durham, NC; Alisha D. Roberson of Chesapeake; great-grandchildren, Ethan M. Free, Margaret L. Free, Max M. Free, Antoine (Tony) M. Jawhar, Vivienne H. C. Jawhar, and Ruby A. Free; and a host of nephews and nieces, their spouses and their children: Frees, McLawhorns, Brays, Turners, Crists, Higginses, Lohmans, Mayses, Fishers, and Jordals, with whom she found great delight and never saw anything but endless good in all of them. She is also survived by her beloved church family at West Park Church of Christ in Portsmouth, where she has been a faithful founding member since 1959. Her smile and unmatched good nature and her kind words for all will be missed. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation and gratitude to the many sisters and brothers of West Park who have made Hazel's life much better over the last several months and throughout her 57 years of service to the church.

A funeral service will be held at West Park Church of Christ, 926 Cherokee Rd, Portsmouth, on Wednesday, March 29, at 11:00 am and will be officiated by Keith Lewis and Gene Langley. Visitation will be at the church prior to the service at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make a memorial donation to West Park Church of Christ. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com

My thoughts are with each of you today. I was so sorry to hear of Hazel's passing. She was such a sweet caring woman. Alisha, Linda & family,
I will not forget your loving & kind grandmother. I just wished that I had fulfilled my promise of visiting her before she passed away. There were some issues at home that prevented me from doing so.
I am glad she had the time to enjoy those daylilies we planted for her years ago.
She always sent the sweetest notes on the cards she sends at Christmas and Easter.I will miss them.
I will keep you in my prayers and remember that you have a friend who will always be here(if you need me).

I met Hazel thru my husband and his family. I always enjoyed seeing her and receiving her Christmas card every year and her great hugs. She was a very sweet woman and she will be surely be missed by everyone. I feel that she is in a better place and will be together with her family on earth when the time comes.
