Helen Winstead Obituary

On May 10, 2023, our beloved Helen E. Winstead departed this earthly life for her heavenly home. She was born to the late Jasper L. Evans and Rebecca (Walker) Evans of Brodnax, VA. She was the third child of thirteen and was educated in the Mecklenburg County school system. Helen worked in various jobs upon coming to Norfolk. She enjoyed working with children as a Pre-K teacher at Garden of Prayer III and Christ Cathedral Kindergarten until her retirement. Helen worshipped at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Norfolk, VA for over 50 years. She served in several different ministries within the church. She was best known for her ability to feed the masses as part of the Kitchen Committee. Her food was known throughout the area not only as a representation of the church, but of her love and commitment to serve and care for others. She was known as the lady that made the best potato salad and rolls. Helen was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, William E. Winstead. To this union, they had two daughters, Clintona Pellerin (Vernon) and Tiffany Winstead. Two grandchildren, Magan Winstead and Christian Pellerin. She was predeceased by 3 brothers and 6 sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory, sisters Marjorie Reed (Michael), Joan Boyd, Regina Evans and Delois King (Larry). Two sisters-in-law, Jean Sykes and Zela Evans. Brother-in-law, Purcell Sykes.
