Howell Matthews Obituary

Howell Lee "Howie" Matthews, 82, of Chesapeake, passed away Friday, October 13, 2023.

Born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Howie was the son of the late James D. Matthews and Fannie Clagum Smith Matthews. Howie retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he was a sheet metal mechanic. He was a member of Great Bridge United Methodist Church.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Peggy J. Matthews; two sons, Howell Lee Matthews, II (Sandra), Mark Matthews (Beth); grandchildren, Matt Matthews, Steve Matthews, Sarah Matthews and Aubrey Matthews ; a brother, Lonnie Matthew, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Great Bridge United Methodist Church, Chesapeake. A reception will follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Howell L. Matthews Memorial Fund, to benefit the American Heart Association.
