James Hailes Obituary

James E. Hailes Sr. PORTSMOUTH - James Edward Hailes Sr., 84, departed this life quietly the afternoon of Jan. 15, 2011. James, affectionately known as "Tater," was an Army veteran and a 20-year employee of TRT. He also provided transportation services for St. Mary's Home in Norfolk as well as the homeless population for more than 10 years, earning him Portsmouth's Volunteer for the Homeless distinguished service award in 2007. James was a longtime member of New Light Baptist Church in Deep Creek. He was the last remaining offspring of Rachel and Willie Hailes. James was also predeceased by a son, James E. Hailes Jr. and a daughter, Brenda Hailes. Left to carry out his legacy of strength and a foundation of prayer includes his wife of 62 years, Virginia Hailes and his 12 surviving children, Virginia Folston (John), Larry Hailes (Starzetta), Phillip Hailes (Amanda), Robert Hailes, Sheryl Ford, Patty Hailes, Lloyd Hailes, Mary Hailes, Marvin Hailes, Lorraine Stokes, Barbara Cummings and Carl Hailes (Renee); a devoted granddaughter, Bren'A Hailes; and a host of other grands, great-grands, in-laws, relatives and friends. A viewing will begin Friday at noon. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, in Holy Trinity Church, 3611 Thorne Ave., Portsmouth. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Services entrusted to Corprew Funeral Home.
