James Johnson Obituary

James Howard Johnson, 88, was called home on Wednesday, May 12, 2021. Howard was born January 20, 1933 in Ivor, Virginia and lived for several years in Norfolk before moving to Portsmouth. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, Howard received a two-year diploma from Virginia State College, Norfolk Division, in 1954. He was awarded a B.S degree from Hampton Institute (later renamed Hampton University) in 1957 before serving two years in the U.S Army. He later received an M.A degree in Arts Education from Columbia University in New York in 1963. He also pursued further studies at New York State University.

Howard successfully combined careers as a working artist and a respected teacher. He taught ceramics for 31 years at Norfolk State University's Fine Arts department before retiring in 1991.

An accomplished ceramicist, Howard exhibited his work in the Hampton Roads area and beyond starting in the early 1960s, with his work having been recognized with honors in exhibits in Virginia and New York and sought by collectors. After retiring from teaching, Howard continued to show his work in galleries in Olde Towne and Churchland and at festivals.

Howard is survived by his wife of 63 years, Fraitus C. Johnson; children Michael K. Johnson, Darryl H. Johnson and his wife Dr. Christyl C. Johnson; grandchildren Emese Dickman, Eric Szaloki-Johnson, Eryca Fischer, and Jerrin Johnson; 5 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

I am so sorry to learn of Howard's passing. I have worked with Howard many times over the years and shown many of his ceramic sculptures and vessels in exhibits at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center and offered many for sale through our Gallery Shop. Howard was such a joy to work with, kind and easy going. He will be truly missed by us and for all that knew him.

My condolences to Fraitus and family. Hold his memory close to your heart and may you find comfort in the memories and times that you all shared.

With Love and Respect,
Gayle Paul

My sincerest condolence is extended to Fraitus and the Johnson Family. I was astonished to hear of James Howard
Johnson 's passing.

Howard, as he was affectionately called, was one of the most kindest, considerate and understanding person who I have ever known. That smile of his and that generous personality made him a very special individual. He was an outstanding teacher and friend to so many. He loved teaching ceramics and his craft was highlly recognized and acknowleged by many. He loved his family and his church and was dedicated to them both.

Howard will truly be missed, but God has a "ceramic" plan for him in heaven. Rest in peace.
