James Jones Obituary
LCDR James H. (Jim) Jones, Jr. USNR, Ret. of Haddam, CT, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on February 24, 2021, at the age of 96. Jim was born July 5, 1924, to James H. and Gertrude F. Jones in Glenside, PA. He grew up in Glenside and graduated from Abington High School. He entered Penn State in 1942 where he lettered in soccer and baseball. He joined the Navy V-12 program in 1943 and was commissioned as an Ensign, USNR in October 1944. He served as a Navy Scout and Raider, and in July 1945 He flew over the Hump to Kunming, China for assignment to Naval Group China (SACO-the Rice Paddy Navy). While at Penn State he met the love of his life, Phyllis Sahlgren. He returned to the US in 1946 to resume his studies at Penn State. In 1947, he and Phyllis were married at Penn State and began 63 years of marriage.
In 1955 Jim and Phyllis moved to Virginia Beach, VA. At the North End they raised four children less than a block from the ocean. They lived there for many years, and later moved to a home off Great Neck Road, where they were regulars at Bubba's at Lynnhaven Inlet. They eventually settled at Atlantic Shores. Jim spent every day devoted to Phyllis during her long struggle with Alzheimer's. When Phyllis passed away in 2011, Jim remained at Atlantic Shores until the fall of 2019. In December, 2019, Jim moved to Connecticut to be with family.
Jim was a member of Virginia Beach Methodist Church for over 65 years, and he and Phyllis made lifelong friends with the members of their Adult Sunday School class. Jim is survived by Randy Jones (Marie) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Connie Jones of Virginia Beach, VA, Beth Anne Jones (Steve) of Lyme, CT, and Jamie Jones (Wendy) of Virginia Beach, VA, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Virginia Beach United Methodist church Foundation.
