Well Shafer, haven't seen you in a while but we sure spent a lot of time and laughs together from JFK days in 78 to Lakeland days in the 90's.Most memorable where the TGIF times spent in Suffolk and Portsmmouth bars as well as the times playing petanque in Churchland...
Well, mon ami,I just wish now I could be a tiny mouse at the pearly gates and hear what kind of dry joke you'll tell Saint Pete just to get in!!!

Mr Shafer had an impact on so many students. I never had him as a teacher while at John F Kennedy however I stopped by his class many times on behalf of my teacher or spent time after dismissal with my classmates who were in his class. Years later when he attended a JFK reunion, he remained friendly, approachable and that all around nice person. May you all feel comfort knowing that Mr Shafer will be missed by so many.

Mr. Shafer was a special teacher who had a unique quality of being able to pass on his knowledge of history to his students in a very special way. It was my pleasure to work with him as a fellow educator while serving as Principal at Lakeland.

Mr. Shafer was a breath of fresh air each day I encountered him at Lakeland High School, where we taught together. His wonderful sense of humor made each day better! My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time. May the good memories they have of him sustain them in the difficult days and weeks ahead.

Many thanks to Mr. Shafer for taking a subject most of us teens found completely dull and making it entertaining. We learned without even realizing it - a unique gift.

Mr. Shafer was in a class by himself! Even as a student you could tell that there was great camaraderie between him and his colleagues. He was interesting, animated and dedicated as a teacher. Thirty-one year's later, I can't remember them all, but I will always remember Mr. Shafer. God bless him and give comfort to his family.

Mr. Shafer was among my favorite teachers at JFK. He didn't just lecture about history, he entertained his classes with wonderful stories that were not told in the textbooks. He had a great sense of humor and spoke sarcasm fluently. I always looked forward to his class. I hope he knows the positive impact he had on so many students throughout the years.

Mr. Shafer was one of our neighbors, here at Westwinds. We will remember him for his smile, laugh, & wit. My daughter & I first met him at our community pool, shortly after we moved in many years ago. After that first meeting, he would smile, wave, & strike up a conversation. He will be greatly missed.

Shafer was a great storyteller, teacher, and friend. We spent many lunches at Lakeland trading stories and laughing. If laughter is the best medicine, Shafer gave us a double dose of medicine that revived us and left us ready to go back to our classes with a smile on our faces. He was one of the most unique people I have ever known.

My condolences to the family. I was a long-time colleague of Shafer's at JFK. He was truly an educator "for the passion - not the paycheck". He will certainly liven up those faculty meetings in Heaven with his comic relief.

Shafer was such an influential person in helping me develop my teaching style. I can't imagine what my beginning years would have been like without him. He lives in his students and colleagues.
