JoAnn Buckhold Obituary

JoAnn Buckhold

Virginia Beach - JoAnn Christine Buckhold, 75, retired Registered Nurse, passed from this life on December 13, 2017. Born on June 10, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio, JoAnn was a dedicated Navy wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and a hard worker which included 33 years as an Obstetrical Labor and Delivery nurse. JoAnn loved Obstetrics and enjoyed seeing long time Virginia Beach friends and neighbors become parents and grandparents. She was the go-to person in an emergency. With her strong Catholic faith beliefs, she enjoyed singing in the St. Nicholas choir, continued as a dedicated parishioner and current Sunshine Club member at Holy Spirit, and spent many of her last years at St. John The Apostle Catholic Parish. When not working or volunteering at Sentara General Hospitals in Virginia Beach or Princess Anne, she enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, reading the daily newspaper and magazines, gathering recipes, going to the movies with friends, watching any baseball game, weekend trips to University of Virginia, North Carolina, and extended summer and holiday stays in San Diego, California. JoAnn was extremely well read and versed with current events. She is missed and was taken from us too soon. She is predeceased by her parents (Chester E. Skiba and Lottie E. Skiba), husband (Fred), sister (Cynthia Skiba), grandchildren (Keith Buckhold II and John Buckhold). She is survived by her sons, Greg Buckhold, Keith Buckhold (wife Carla Buckhold), her daughter Marie Jo Phillips (husband JR Phillips), and her four grandchildren, Keith III, as well as Reagan, Kyler, and Camden Phillips. JoAnn spent some her of Navy life in the Philippines and Puerto Rico; she was a Virginia Beach resident of 48 years. After retiring from Virginia Beach General, she started volunteering in Outpatient Surgery at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital after its grand opening and accumulated more than 2,600 volunteer hours. She was true to her religion, faithful to her husband of over 47 years, and extremely proud of her children. A life celebration service will be held Wednesday December 27, at 10am, at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church located at 1968 Sandbridge Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: "Sentara Princess Anne Hospital Auxiliary" at 2025 Glenn Mitchell Dr., Virginia Beach, VA 23456. Dear Friend...may you rest in peace w your beloved Fred and John. I will miss talking to you and all the advice you gave me for fighting my cancer. You understood. But I am grateful for living next door to you and playing bingo. Love you sweet lady and my prayers for your dear family.

I offer my prayers and deepest condolences to JoAnn's family.

Jo and I worked together at SVBGH. She was one of my mentors as a new RN. She shared her abundant knowledge freely, with love, and humor. She made the workday more fun. The pairing of Jo and Judy A. were my dream team for busy days. They would remain calm, cool, and collected; all the while providing excellent patient focused care despite the pace.

Jo's dry sense of humor provided fodder for many lighthearted memories.

An excellent nurse, Jo was especially successful with the very young new mothers. With only a short time to provide education on self and newborn care, Jo quickly established the trusting relationship required. This valuable asset expressed through a relaxed, nurturing, encouraging approach, provided a solid educational foundation for many families to begin their journey.

Every hand, every heart she has touched will be her lasting legacy. JoAnn will be missed.
