John Carter Obituary

John M. Carter Sr. PORTSMOUTH - John Marshall Carter Sr., 80, passed away Saturday Oct. 23, 2010. He was a native of Bertrane, Va., and was a retired lawyer and CPA in Portsmouth. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School and its McEntire School of Commerce. He was a member of the Beech Grove United Methodist Church, the Ambassadors Club, Portsmouth Bar Association, past treasurer for over 25 years and past president of the Cradock Lions Club and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Joyce Smith Carter; one daughter, Karen Swan and her husband Capt. Kenneth Swan of Gales Ferry, Conn.; two sons, John M. "Chip" Carter Jr. and his wife Terri of Richmond, Kevin Carter and his wife Amy of Elon, N.C.; one brother, Graham Carter and his wife Martha of Portsmouth; and 11 grandchildren, Wesley, Brandon, Masha, Austin, Kendal, Maggie, Quinton Swan, Kelsey, Grace, Jay and Matthew Carter. A funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Meadowbrook Memorial Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family would like to thank Odyssey Health Care and Parsons Residential Care for their compassionate care given to John and his family. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

Mrs. C. and Karen, Chip and Kevin- I am sorry to hear of your loss of Mr. C. The time I spent at your home growing up is a very fond memory as I was embraced with humor, honesty and kindness. I think of Mr. C as a man with a mission. He always had a goal and a determination to make things right. My thoughts are with you all.
