Born Jan 28, 1930, in New Orleans, LA, died at age 91 on Oct 6, 2021, in Tampa FLA.
John was one of the earliest software developers designing data systems with Boeing Corp. assigned with data analysis for the structural demonstration of the B-52 Bomber. As a highly classified software engineer and analyst for Systems Development Corp. from 1959 to 1985, John became General Manager with SDC serving four Navy client locations nationwide. He later worked for Advanced Technologies, Inc., developing Navy and coastguard systems.
At age 15 John spent the summer employed by the Treas. Dept. in New Orleans. He graduated from Metairie High School at the age of 16. John graduated from Tulane University in 1955 with a B.S. in Mathematics. His further studies included UCLA, U of Kansas City, and the U of Wichita, the city where he met his wife, Pauline Marie Dobrott, and married in 1958.
John served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 working as a draftsman and similar to the job he held in New Orleans at Blattman Sheet Metal on Toulouse St. during summers while he studied at Tulane and for 3 years full time. While attending Tulane John served as Treas. of The Newman Club. He was also in the Marine Reserve in those years. While serving with the U.S. Army from 1955-1957 John taught college math for the U.S. Armed Forces Inst. in Japan.
John and his wife Pauline were well-traveled having toured and experienced many countries throughout the world through Tulane U and Chrysler Museum. John was well known for his discerning art and wine collection.
Work assignments moved John's family from Wichita, KS to Santa Monica, CA, Kansas City, MO, Phoenix, AZ, San Fernando, CA, and then to Virginia Beach, VA in 1971 where John retired. After John's retirement, he volunteered as a tax preparer for the AARP for many years.
John and Pauline were both dedicated parishioners of the Church of the Ascension, taking responsibility as confirmation sponsors. After Pauline died in 2017, John moved to Harbor's Edge in Norfolk. In 2021 he moved to Tampa, FL.
John is predeceased by his mother and father, Zephyr and John Crowley, Sr. of Metairie LA, and his wife Pauline Marie Dobrott of Wichita, KS. He is survived by his daughter Karen and her husband Eugene Gardner of England; his son Daniel J. Crowley and wife Susie Nelson-Crowley of Tampa, FL; his son, Patrick J. Crowley and wife Sharon of Dayton, VA; his granddaughter Elizabeth Ratliff and husband Tim with great-grandchildren Wren and Fletcher of Shenandoah, VA; his sister, Betty Wild and husband Mickey of Metairie, LA; and many nephews and nieces.
A memorial mass will be held at 1pm Fri., Nov 12th at Church of the Ascension 4853 Princess Anne Rd. Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
