John Daughtrey Obituary
Wilton Manors, FL - May 23, 2015. John, 82, was a Norfolk native educated at the Williams School before graduating from the Norfolk Academy. He attended the University of Virginia, received his BFA in Interior Design from the Maryland Institute, studied with the Parsons School of Design in Europe and obtained a B.S. in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University.
A choirboy at Christ and St. Luke's: he had a life-long love of music-especially opera. His passion for sailing started as a Sea Scout and led to many cruises around the world. Both a gourmand and a gourmet he was well known for his fabulous dinner parties and rich desserts with "all calories removed."
John inherited an eye for color and design and became president and owner of Garner-Daughtrey Interior Design. A strong belief in equal rights drove his work for the Norfolk Office of Elections.
He was predeceased by parents, Romie Hampden Daughtrey and Esther Godwin Widgeon Daughtrey and son Andrew Christopher Daughtrey.
He is survived by his spouse and partner of 21 years, Jeffrey Masters and his daughter, Stephanie Daughtrey of Norfolk.
Per his request, there will be no service but donations may be made to the Andrew C. Daughtrey choir fund at Christ & St Luke's or your local PBS station.

Dear Stephanie,
My fondest memories of my years in the Office of Elections will always include the years you father served with us. He filled the office with imagination, wit, and humor that left a lasting imprint on each of us. Beneath the impeccable dapper appearance beat the heart of a man with an incredible sense of civic responsibility. That love for the election process made it possible to look past the austere decor of our office and the staff's sometimes mundane approach to fashion.
I have attached a photo that shows our effort to convince your father that he did not need to move to Florida to get tropical vibes. Unfortunately, not even the sandbox, shovel and toys on his desk was enough to keep him in the cold North.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
