John Lofton Obituary

John H. "Jack" Lofton passed peacefully into the arms of our Heavenly Father on Monday, November 15, 2021.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lydia V. Lofton; his parents, Bebe Ann and Charles Lofton; and sisters Rose Lee Slade and Goldie Lofton. Left to cherish his memory are his sons, John (wife, Tana) and Roger (wife, Aimee); his daughter, Cindy Bailey (husband, Russell); grandchildren Meagan Matthews (husband, Tyler), Brittany Bailey (wife, Tonya), Kendall Buonviri (husband, Randy), and Ryan Bailey; three great-grandchildren: Austin, Aubrey, and Brooks; and nieces Marianne Flahiff and Rosalie Maxey.

Although born in Petersburg, Virginia, Jack was raised in Newtown and resided in Portsmouth for all of his life. He retired from Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) as a field engineer, then, with Lydia, opened Casa Rio at Portside. Following this adventure, he worked part time for Procter and Gamble and Ray's Dog House. Jack also was an avid volunteer at Olive Branch Little League, later establishing the Portsmouth Super League for those guys who grew older but still loved the game of baseball. Jack was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as past Grand Knight of St. Paul's Council 418.

Jack was known for his kindness and generosity, but especially, his zest for life and love of people. He was a true gentleman and will sorely be missed by all who knew him.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 12:00 noon Wednesday, November 24, at St. Paul Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 to noon. Burial will be private at Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, 536 Homestead Rd., Chesapeake, VA 23321. Condolences may be registered at BWFosterFuneralHome.com.

Uncle Jack will truly be missed by all of his relatives in San Antonio. He loved to come down to visit and he ate Mexican food every day and for almost every meal. He was funny and would offer good advice when it was asked for. Pretty sure he drank Lone Star while he was here. My special thanks go out to all of you guys (relatives) for your support of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns. Again, my deepest sympathy goes out to everyone in Virginia that was blessed and fortunate to have known this fine gentleman.

My sincere sympathy to all the Lofton family. I worked with Jack at C & P Telephone Company in the 70's. Jack was always smiling and kidding around with everyone. He and Lydia helped me when I was trying to find furniture for a new apartment and I have always remembered their kindness. So sorry for your loss.

When I saw that, Papa Jack, Captain Jack Lofton had joined his Lydia, in heaven, all I could think of was there love for each and the way they would dance when ever music was playing.
Jacks love for life and family was an inspiration to me. He loved everyone and worked hard to make sure everyone felt special when around him.
I first worked with Jack at C&P Telephone Company, and then with little league football his love for people of all age’s shined.
Rest In Piece my friend, you earned you place at the feet of our Lorduntil we meet again, I’ll be keeping your family in my prayers that they will find piece in knowing how much that you loved them and that you and Lydia are again together.

The statement, "Jack was known for his kindness and generosity, but especially, his zest for life and love of people," could not be more accurate. For the short time I knew Jack he reflected these words and will forever be in my memory as one to emulate. Thank you for your presence while with us, Jack, and may God bless you and your family. -Dan Foster, Knights of Columbus, Saint Paul's Council 418.
