John O'Grady Obituary

John C. O'Grady

Virginia Beach - John Charles O'Grady passed away on October 15, 2016, surrounded by love of his family after a brave kick butt fight with pulmonary fibrosis.

John served in the Navy from 1959 to 1989 and retired as a Master Chief. While in the Navy he served with VRC-40, VF-41, VF-84, and with CAG-8, being outstanding shipmate. John will be remembered by his love for the F-14 (Jet), his love of music, fast cars, fast women, and riding his BMW K-1600 GTL with the wind in his face on winding, curving, and twisting roads. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 327, VFW Post 1211, FRA Branch 99, the Red Knights Chapter 4, VVA Chapter 48, and a member of the Wednesday morning Veterans breakfast group at Beach Pub. John was part of the Three Musketeers and leaves behind Chach Ciaccio and Paul Davis.

John was the son of the late Charles and Elynor O'Grady and was predeceased by his sister, Maryellen O'Grady and Karen Clemens (mother of Michael Vinsend). He is survived by his angel, Becky Wentworth; his sons, Scott O'Grady and Michael Vinsend and his wife, Bobbie; two grandsons, Tyler and Kyle; his daughter, Shannon Hilbert and her husband, Keith; his sister, Patricia S. Daley and her husband, Leo; his brothers, Kevin O'Grady and his wife, Elvira, Michael J. O'Grady and his wife, Shelley, and Christopher B. O'Grady and his wife, Alison J. Prata; and his God daughter, Kathi Abreu and many more nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many friends and shipmates.

The family would like to say thank you to the team of Westminster Canterbury for their Hospice team and the excellent care and support they gave to John.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Celebration of John's Life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel by Chaplain Greg Dalla-Tezze. A gathering will be held at FRA Branch 99, 357 Edwin Dr., Va. Beach after the service for a light lunch and meeting of the family. John will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery Cemetery with full Navy Honors at a later date.

One of the highlights of my life was to meet, and work with John C. O'Grady AFCM, USN (Ret.), in support of Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAISYSCOM) Headquarters, in Arlington, Virginia, 1987-1994. We bonded immediately in our work and personal interests, which included our love of the Navy and aircraft of every description. We often had long conversations of our service experiences, sea-stories, and good times on the road. When John joined the company, Information Spectrum Inc., he brought his vast computer experience and professional attitude that greatly enhanced productivity and success to the organization. John's great humor ( it was the Irush in him) , that made him a friend and favorite of all the lives he touched. His dedication and honor were hallmarks of his journey through life. I am very proud to have been his friend, and appreciative of the inspiration which resonated with his numerous friends and acquaintenances far and wide. Finally, he is at rest. His duties completed, and God's rewards now await him. Good bye, my friend. I'll remember you always.
