Joseph Maniscalco Obituary

Joseph J. Maniscalco Jr.

Norfolk - Entertainer/Musician, Joseph (Joe) Maniscalco Jr. went to sing for his Savior in Heaven Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Although he performed all over the country, he always called Norfolk home. Joe leaves behind his wife, Tammie and son, Joseph III. He is survived by his father, Joe Maniscalco Sr., two sisters, Donna Riley and husband, Jim and 3 children of Suffolk, Mary Maniscalco-Theberge and husband, Dan and their 2 children of Reston, and his brother John Maniscalco of Norfolk. Joe loved life and always lived it to the fullest; believing each day to be a gift. In honor of the love and talent he shared with his audiences across the country there will be a celebration of his life at Crossroads Church, 1127 Surrey Crescent, Norfolk, VA. Wednesday, February 5, at 2 p.m. Ridesharing is encouraged. As Joe requested, in lieu of flowers *an account* has been established in his son's name. . . BB&T, account ending in 2440 *for Joseph J. Maniscalco III*. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the cremation.

Joe was literally the life of the party. He seemed to always be smiling and laughing and making others do the same. Upon his passing, the light certainly dimmed. The world was a better place with Joe in it. I am honored to have been his friend and those years of friendship will be forever cherished. He will always be remembered and forever missed.

Tammie:

I'm so sorry about Joe ... Just found your e-mail ... He didn't look that bad
when we visited a month of so ago - so I didn't have any idea ...

During our visit, Joe pointed proudly to your picture Tammie. I'm
sorry we didn't connect that day at your home. Your son was there
and Joe was especially proud of Joe III, bragging on his achievements,
personality and people skills. During my visit, Joe III answered the phone.
It was a solicitation of some type and Joe III launched into some silly
routine - his Dad just laughed and beamed, "that's my boy."

Joe and I met when I was teenager, working at the Newport News shipyard
back in 1973. I was a lonely hillbilly, played guitar and singing, so we
had some common ground but come from totally different backgrounds ...
But I really needed a friend. I was a long way from the mountains of
North Carolina.

Joe brought me home to meet his folks at Willoughby Bay. His family
welcomed me like one of their own ...

I've referred to my Mansicalso experience many times. His family
opened my eyes to many of my personal jaded stigmas ... i.e. They
had alcohol with a their meals (a small glass of wine) ... They all
were talking at one time (vs my quiet mountain home) ... They
had a big family (vs just me an my parents).

Joe visited me in my dingy apartment and helped me pass the
days in a place and time so foreign to me. We sang, picked
and laughed together ... Joe was uplifting, encouraging and
a real inspiration ... He was my only friend for almost a year ...
All good memories ...

Joe and I were always looking for something fun and interesting,
so we decided to take a cruise together ... We were both young,
single and had time on our hands ... The whistle blew as we
walked onto the hugger ocean liner ... Wow, what an experience
for this hillbilly ... Joe knew exactly where we needed to go -
lunch in the grand ballroom ... marble topped tables, brass
accouterments and a spectacular stage ... What a memorable
lunch we had together on our that cruise!

By the way, about that cruise, did I mention were we wearing hard hats and dirty
work clothes on that trip? And that the furniture was covered with drop
cloths and the boat was dry docked at the shipyard, being repainted
and not moving an inch ... We were lunchtime castaways from the
shipyard and had great fun imagining being "stars on the sea stage."

I undertand Joe went on to travel the world, performing on cruise
ships ... I'm smiling now, remembering our first cruise together in 1973 ...
Maybe I helped plant a seed for his future ...

Through the years, when passing thru Newport News, I've checked in
on Joe from time to time ... He was never too busy to spend a few minutes
with me, taking a break from what he was into at the time ... On one visit he
was repairing a boat - again carrying on our teenage tradition ..

I still play music and sing so I've dreamed of Joe coming here and performing
for the hillbillies in Western North Carolina. It was not to be in this life.

But I'll keep playing for him down here until the Lord calls me to His big
stage ... I look forward to seeing Joe there ...

I'm sorry for your loss and invite you to visit Asheville, North Carolina.

Optimistically,
Will Springer
Friend since 1973

Where words fail
music speaks.
It speaks of the pain
of the sorrow.
Of the lost,
of the life we live.
It shares emotions
it's a way to connect,
to understand
what others feel.
Where words fail,
music speaks.
It tells the truth
whether you want it to
or you don't.
Music shares the souls
of those we're around,
of those in the world
that we're living.
I wish to share
my music with you.
So you can understand
the pain I feel.
So I can share my soul with you.
So you can understand
What I'm going through.
love you Joe,
Going to be one very missed Man

Joe will always hold a special place in my memory and heart. When I was going through my divorce his music and his joyful kindness helped me get through it. God Bless you Tammie and Joseph III, and may he help you through this very sad time.

That he's gone. He's just away.
With his smile, his One-Can-Jam band

I think of him still the same, I say,
He's not gone, he's found somewhere else to play.

Joe was truly a blessing in my life. I am a trained singer, but due to severe stage fright I didn't pursue it after college. That all changed 5 years ago when Joe gave me a chance to join him on stage and we went on to perform gigs together for the next few years. It was because of Joe that I finally got over my stage fright and today I am still doing what I love most in life... singing. I really owe it all to Joe. He was always positive and encouraging, and of course fun to be around. I will forever hold the memories of the time we spent performing together dear to my heart.

Joe,

We were always, literally, miles apart. Yet, whenever we would get together, your warm smile and gentle soul being made each reunion more joyful.

When we were young, your mom said you would lament "Why is Jack so much taller than me? He is only 6 months older." Dear cousin, physical size is not a measure of stature. From all that has been said, and will be said about you, you alway stood tall.

There will be another Maniscalco reunion; one which God himself will host. 'Til then, Joseph Jack.
