Joseph Paul Umlah

Joseph Paul Umlah, 69, of Virginia Beach, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, following a brief illness.

Joe was born in Hanover Township, PA, and was the son of the late Joseph F. and Elizabeth Vesek Umlah. He graduated from Hanover Township High School, where he played baseball and basketball.

Joe joined the U.S. Navy in 1973, and after 20 years of service, retired in 1994 as a Chief Yeoman. After a successful Navy career, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from St. Leo's University. He retired from the City of Chesapeake, where he processed payroll for the Police Department.

Joe loved all sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and University of Iowa sports. He was an excellent golfer and always looked forward to golfing with close friends.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, LuAnn Sylakiewicz Umlah; children, Stacey and her husband, Michael Emanuele, of Virginia Beach, Brian and his wife, Laura Umlah of Iowa City, IA; grandchildren, Joshua and Christopher Emanuele, Alice and Elliot Umlah; sister, MaryAnn and her husband, Leonard Sawicki, of Wilkes-Barre, PA; brother, Gerald and his wife Andrea Umlah, of Hanover Township, PA; aunt, Ruth and her husband, Walter Polinski, of E Hartford, CT, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Princess Anne Chapel, on Sunday, April 23, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Luke Catholic Church on Monday, April 24, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, you may contribute to St. Luke Catholic Church, 2304 Salem Rd.
