June Burnside Obituary

June T. Burnside transferred to the Lord's heavenly kingdom on January 16, 2019. In her final days many family members traveled great distances to express their love. She was a beautiful, convivial, caring woman. She was born 79 years ago in Norfolk, Virginia to Carl Thomas Sr and Annabelle Thomas. They predeceased her as did her two brothers, Carl Jr, and Richard. She graduated from Norview H.S. and embarked on a 55 year career primarily with Xerox, several hotels being awarded several employee of the month certificates. Her favorite position was human resources director for several hotels which enabled her to care for and assist others. Her husband is grateful for her kindness to his clients. She was an avid water skier which evolved into years of snow skiing. For vacations she and Bill enjoyed the many memories from traveling in Europe and across the USA. For 3 years she and a friend, as volunteers, provided crisis counseling to persons considering suicide. She crocheted providing her creations to family. As she neared retirement she enjoyed providing American home life to 4 foreign exchange students. One extraordinary fact: she never received a traffic ticket during her 60 years of driving. She is survived by her husband Bill, her two sons R. Kyle Horton, and two stepchildren, Christopher S. Burnside and Laura B Cook, 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The family is thankful to the caring staff of Sentara Hospice House who provided pain free comfort to June. In lieu of flowers please make contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011. Condolences may be left for the family at www.altmeyerfh.com.A celebration of June's life will take place at a date to be announced.

I met June Thomas at the beginning of our 9th grade introduction to NHS. We sat on the steps together waiting for the bell to ring for about twenty minutes; she was beautiful and sweet, we held hands, and I fell in love. Then the bell rang and I never saw her or talked to her again for close to fifty years when we had a brief exchange of emails and a phone call just to catch up. I'm glad that I knew her; I'm happy that we each had such good marriages; and to her family, I'm so sorry for your loss and glad that you were blessed with sharing each other's love and lives.

Our thoughts are with all of you as you navigate the valley of the shadow of death. May you knew deeply the presence of the Shepherd, as He cares for you during this time. It has been such a pleasure to get to know Bill recently, and we will keep you in our prayers. Scott & Lynne
