Larry Mayo Obituary

Our beloved father, Larry Leigh Mayo, Sr., aged 78, passed away on August 11, 2022 due to complications from COVID. Dad was born on June 15, 1944 in Norfolk, VA to parents, George Walters Mayo and Elsa Frugard Mayo. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his older brother, George "Butch" Mayo; infant brother, John; and brother-in-law, Ray Hinton.

Left to cherish his memories are his children: Paige Mayo Gardner, Karen Law (Kelly), and Larry Mayo, Jr.; ex-wife and good friend, Christy Roush Mayo; sister, Dolly Mayo Hinton; sister-in-law, Marilyn Mayo; brothers-in-law, John Roush (Kimberly) and Charles Roush (Maureen); and sister-in-law, Paula Olesen (Mark). Also surviving are his grandchildren: Rachel, Christian, and Carter Law and Larry Mayo III; uncle, Roy Frugard; cousin and friend, Neil Frugard; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dad also leaves behind his much-loved dogs, Fred and Champ, who will miss him dearly. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all.

Dad grew up in the Norview area of Norfolk and the family were members of First Lutheran Church in Ghent. He attended Norview High School before relocating to Virginia Beach during his high school years, graduating from Princess Anne High School. He went through his apprenticeship as a pipefitter with NORSHIPCO before moving to the Ford Motor Assembly Plant where he retired after 30+ years in their skilled trades division.

Dad maintained a lifelong passion for his ‘Redskins', playing golf, watching old movies, watching Gunsmoke and The Andy Griffith Show, and spending time with friends and family.

We would like to express our appreciation to the staff of the Sentara Leigh ICU and Emergency Room departments for the professional care and kindness shown to our father during his final days.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, 2022 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home located at 1485 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach, VA. Cremation Society of Virginia also assisted with arrangements. Casual attire is recommended as dad was "a casual kind of guy!"

If you wish to remember dad in some way, we suggest you perform random acts of kindness or contribute to any of the local animal rescue shelters.

RIP Dad, until we meet again.

so sorry to hear about Larry, we were best of friends growing up in Norview. I lived at the corner of Norview Ave and Giles Cr....we played hundreds of times in the old neighborhood e.g. football, basketball etc. We also spent many hours at the old Norview pool room and before COVID Larry come Footers Sports Pub on Weds nights, have a beer together and he would watch me shoot league pool. I thought the world of him and considered him one of my best friends!!! He will be missed!! Sorry I missed the service as I was out of town for nearly two weeks. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family...you have lost a DAMN GOOD MAN!!!!! If anyone would like to share some old times I can be reached at 757 633 4329 (cell) God bless!
