Lawrence Cardon Obituary

Lawrence Marc Cardon, peacefully passed on April 18th, surrounded by his loving family. Larry is survived by his wife, Lucy, who never left his side, his son David and wife, Elyse, his daughter Rebecca and fiancée Patrick, his brother Richard, his brother Reid and his wife Cheri, his four grandchildren, Bella, Sylvie, Avi and Flora and nieces, nephews and cousins around the country. He was predeceased by his brother Wayne, of blessed memory, and his wife JoAnn Cardon-Glass.

Larry was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 3, 1943, to his loving parents Leon and Selma Cardon, of blessed memory, who often referred to him as "Larry Boy". At the age of 4, the family relocated to Portsmouth, VA, where they became leaders in the Jewish community. He attended Churchland High School and the University of Virginia (Go Hoos!) After graduating, he returned home to work in the family business, Star Band Manufacturing Company. During this time, he met the love of his life, Lucy, and with her encouragement, he attended University of Richmond Law School. Eventually, he found his way to The Decker Law Firm, where he practiced traffic and criminal law for over 30 years.

His passion for people brought thousands of clients, police, judges, and fellow attorneys into his circle of friends, and he always said he never worked a day in his life. Larry had the gift of making everyone feel important. To know him was to love him.

If you spent a minute with Larry, you've seen the wallet photo, and you know he was beyond proud of his early six-pack. He found the gym after being picked on as a scrawny teenager. It became his home away from homeâ€"his happy place. He went on to compete, breaking many world records. One of his proudest moments was appearing with his daughter on Good Morning America as world record bench press holders. He was truly a legend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Strelitz International Academy or your charity of choice.

Funeral services for Larry will take place at Congregation Beth El in Norfolk, Wednesday, April 20th at 10:30 a.m., followed by the graveside service at Gomley Chesed Cemetery in Portsmouth. Online condolences may be offered to the family at hdoliver.com.

I met Larry in the summer of 1989 when I came down from Philadelphia to intern in his law firm after my junior year in college. He made an immediate and lasting impression on me, one that impacted my choosing to pursue the law as a profession.

His spirit, personality, welcoming nature and all-around great guy stature made my summer in Norfolk much better than I had expected.

I felt right at home immediately hanging out with Larry. I especially appreciated his tips on how to increase my bench press at the gym. I even almost bought one of his cars from him.

He is missed, and will be remembered, by more that just family & and close friends. I'm fortunate to have met Larry.

I just read about Larry. I was a young g man when I needed proper representation. I found Larry. He was such a great man. I remember i was working for Autotrader.com at the time and Larry needed help selling his candy red 911 Porsche. I listed it and was sold within the week. He was happy. Thank you Larry not for what you helped me with but being such a wonderful man to so so many. My condolences

I am truly saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Cardon. It was always a pleasure to talk to Larry about a client he was representing. Larry would always speak to my children when I had to "Drag" them to court during summer breaks, Larry would make them feel special to be my kids and ALWAYS showed me the utmost respect. Larry was proud of his son David and I would like to see them in the hallway together. The pictures in his wallet, on his phone and stories from the Amazing Race his precious daughter was a part of. God Bless the Cardon Family, and may his peace and love sustain you during your loss of a great Man.

My deepest condolences to you Elysie, David, and Rebecca in the loss of your husband and father. Rebecca, I still remember the day that you and your Dad were "bench pressing" on the Good Morning America, because your classmates and I stopped Spanish class to watch and celebrate the two of you. He was "one proud Dad" and the guys in the class were blown away by how much you could press. I'm glad we got to share the moment together.

Larry was always my favorite attorney, we sparred many times over the years, particularly some memorable DUI cases. Hw was always fair, courteous, friendly and a total gentleman. You knew he would put up a good case for his client, but did not attack or treat police and witnesses harshly. I respected him as a tough opponent and a truly good man. He always had a friendly comment or short story when we met outside the courtroom, frequently at the gym. He always treated someone as a friend, and I was pleased to know him over the years. He will be missed.

I will miss Mr. Cardon, who if he were here would tell me to call him Larry. I didn't have as many interactions as I would've liked but each one was impactful, mostly observing how he treated others and how others were so happy to see him. The few times I shadowed Larry in court, it was as if I was walking with a celebrity. He was a great man and role model!

I am saddened to hear of Larry's passing. My sincerest condolences to Larry's family and friends. I have vivid memories of Larry, assisting Coach Burton during wrestling practice at Churchland High School circa 65/66. I recall Larry having the iconic V-shaped body of a weightlifter. His patience and wrestling skills were a major help to this young fledgling wrestler back in the day. R.I.P my friend.
