Lawrence Sutton Obituary

Lawrence Lee Sutton, 88, passed away on December 26, 2021 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Perquimans County, NC and was the son of the late George and Nannie Sutton. He was drafted by the US Army where he served two years before being honorably discharged. Larry and Carolyn along with their two daughters moved to Virginia Beach in 1970 and worked as a State Sales Director with Anheuser-Busch from 1970-1976. He later moved to Hoffman Beverage Company where he worked his way up to President before retiring after 37 years with the company. He was a founding member of Monarch Bank, and the Bayville Golf Club, a member of the Virginia/National Beer Wholesalers Associations and a previous member of Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club, and Broad Bay Country Club. Larry was very involved with the Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach, where he joined the Royal Order in 1984, became chairman of the Festival in 1995, and later became King Neptune XXVII in year 2000. Larry also founded the Neptune Festival annual Charity Golf Tournament that continues to this day.

Larry was known for his beautiful smile, his love for his family, classic country music, and was an avid golfer whom played until the age of 85, and accomplished 4 hole in ones. He also loved fishing, hunting and gardening especially tomatoes. He sponsored and started many of the local charity golf tournaments in this area and raised lots of money for those charities. Larry loved the Clydesdale Horses affiliated with Anheuser-Busch, and brought them in town here locally several times for community events.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Carolyn Sutton, two daughters, Denise Hurst of Virginia Beach, Laura Burgess and her husband Scott of Virginia Beach, a sister, Frances Sutton Davis and her husband Ray of Winston-Salem, NC, a brother, George Carlton Sutton and his wife Emma of Fairview, Texas, three grandchildren, Brian Burgess, JR and his wife Jessica, Dean Hurst, JR and his wife Natalie, and Lindsay Browning and her husband T.J., four great grandchildren, Reed Sutton Burgess, Porter James Burgess, Terry Lee Browning, III (Tripp), and Lillian Gray Browning, several nieces, nephews, extended family members and good friends.

He was preceded in death by a son in law, Dean Hurst.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Westminster-Canterbury Hoy Center for their professional loving care during this difficult time.

Due to the surge in the Covid-19 pandemic, all public services including the visitation on Sunday and the funeral on Monday have been postponed until further notice. A celebration of his life for family and friends will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Care Foundation of Tidewater, or to the Shriners Hospital for Children. Carolyn, we had planned to come to the service yesterday but read in the paper that the plans had changed. Our hearts go out to you. You were always such great friends with mom and dad, so many memories of Florida golf and gatherings. Larry was always friendly with that nice smile for everyone!

Some of my fondest memories of Larry took place at the condo on the eighth green at Kingsmill hosting customers during the PGA tournaments years ago. What a fun time that was. Larry always had a smile on his face, a cigar, lit or not, and a cold AB product on hand. Larry was a great guy and will be missed. Our prayers to Carolyn and the family.
