Captain Demmin's obituary defines who he was by what it didn't say. He was a rare breed, a Captain of a ballistic missle nuclear submarine (SSBN 601) at the height of the Cold War. Unfathomable responsibility, yet humble and unassuming. I knew him while our sub was in refit but I ended up with a different crew/captain. When talking with his crew during turnovers, though, they loved the guy.
A man of great career achievement, yet my sense is he cared more about things outside of that career...family, community, country.
