On January 11th, 1968 at 4:11 pm in Duke Hospital, Dr. Leslie Wasserman delivered me to my parents the late Robert & Evelyn Saunders of Durham, NC. For over 3 decades, I've always wondered what ever happened to him and if whether or not he was still in the Durham, NC area. Growing up I was always an analytical kid who loved to read and figure out ways to repair (break, lol) things such as my toys, etc. It wasn't until I became a teenager when my mom finally gave me my, "Certificate of Live Birth", for me to keep up with since I was deemed responsible to do so at 16 years of age. It was then that after reading the information contained therein that I wanted to know, "Who was it that delivered this most precious God - sent gift to my wonderful and loving parents??" I saw the name, "Dr. Leslie Wasserman" scribbled very distinctly in the little box on my certificate. I was born at a time when race relations were very high in America especially in the South. My mom was uneducated house wife and my dad was in the military often being gone from time to time as my mom was having my other younger brothers after me. I thank God for Dr. Wasserman who treated my parents with the utmost respect and dignity as well as who placed me on my mothers chest shortly after I was born. He made sure that this child (me) had received nothing but the best care that he and the staff at Duke Hospital could provide irregardless of my parents color, nationality, religion, or creed. Thank you to the Wasserman family for sharing such a great man and from what I hear, an awesome singer with the citizens of Durham, NC.

Be Blessed,
Robert G. Saunders, Jr.

Though it has been 3 years since Dr. Wasserman left this earth, I just found out today that he did. He came to mind many times through the years and I looked him up,, but only today I found him here. He was my doctor for a few years and delivered my miracle baby girl in May of 1990. I went through premature labor way early and the chances of survival were slim. One of the 3 doctors in the clinic at the time gave me higher dosage of medicine to stop the labor and I almost died through the night. the next morning Dr. Wasserman showed up and found out the mistake and fixed it. Praise God and thanks to his wisdom, my baby survived and I carried her full term. She often asks me to tell her the story and I do. Thank you Dr. Wasserman for all you did and for touching my life in the most beautiful way.

I believe I'm one of the 7000 babies he delivered in the 80's. My birthday is near and saw his name on my crib card and found he passed. Thank you doc for bringing me safely into the world.

I was a resident with Les at Duke and a fishing buddy. We kept in touch all to infrequently in the following years. One of my greatest regrets is that I was not aware that he was ill. I tried to reach him in the time that he must have been aware of trouble, but to no avail. However, it is typical that Les did not easily share the sometime very difficult times he experienced. I knew him to be one of the most kind, compassionate, unassuming people to have walked on this planet.

You will always be with me in the beautiful, and funny, memories I have of you. You were a wonderful father not just to Amy but to all of the young people, like myself, who crossed your path. As long as I live, you will be with me tucked away with my most cherished memories. All my love until we meet again.

condolences to all who loved Les. He was one of my favorite fraternity brothers at Duke. He also came back to Duke Chapel to hear me do the bass solos in MESSIAH in 1987 & took Barbara & me out to dinner. We loved him , are proud of his excellent career as a physician, & share your grief in his too early death. Please make sure Joanne knows Barbara & Charlie Mike send her their love.

Dr. Wasserman was a true Renaissance man, he was very talented, beautiful voice, and most important, a wonderful Doctor. He was my first adult Doctor at 18 years of age, I always believe he had my best interest at heart. I am so thankful that he was the Dr. that took care of me during my life, my sad miscarriage, my wonderful son's birth, and he continued to see me, even after I moved away from Virginia Beach. I wish everyone could have such a loving, caring Doctor like Dr. Wasserman. My deepest sympathies go to his family, you had a wonderful father.
