Madeleine Winfree Obituary

Madeleine Gilhooley Winfree, 84 years old, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2022 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. A native of New York, she was born on November 16, 1937 to Rose and Christopher Gilhooley in Troy. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Donald Gilhooley.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frederick E. Winfree, and her three children and their families, Laura Winfree Simon of Woodbridge, Virginia; Kimberly Winfree Koehler and son-in-law James Koehler of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Lynn Winfree Mathews of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Hunter Mathews, Rachel Koehler Tolbert (Jason), Justin Simon, Emily Simon, Connor Mathews, and Amanda Mathews; and great grandchild, Ryder Mathews. She also is survived by her sister-in-law, Teresa Gilhooley; and her five nieces and their families, Colonel (Retired) Christine Rem, Betsy Glass, Robin Ore, Cathy Hamel, and Suzanne Phelps.

Upon the completion of her education, she was employed by the New York State Executive Chamber in Albany, New York, serving on the staff of former Governors Averell Harriman and Nelson Rockefeller. In 1959, she married her wonderful husband whom she met while on vacation in Virginia Beach. From 1974 to 1996, she established her own court reporting agency and was a member of the National Court Reporters Association. Madeleine was active in the community by serving as President, Virginia Beach Jaycettes; Princess Anne Business and Professional Women's Club; Virginia Beach Junior Women's Club; and the Princess Anne Women's Club. Her accomplishments included Outstanding Women of America and Tidewater District Outstanding Junior by the Tidewater District Federation of Virginia. Her compassion of others was vast as she touched many charities across Virginia.

She enjoyed spending the warm summer days with her family at the beach and boating on the Chesapeake Bay. Madeleine was also a member of the Broad Bay Sailing Association and the Great Bridge Cruising Club with her husband, Fred.

The family would like to thank her doctors, nurses, and staff at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital and the staff at Commonwealth Senior Living for their kindness and compassion.

She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. A celebration of Madeleine's life will be held late spring 2022 and further details to follow.
