Margaret Gill Obituary

Margaret E. Gill

Virginia Beach - 87, passed away on Aug 9, 2018. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and musician. She was born Margaret E. Thompson on Feb 20, 1931 in Jackson, Michigan and showed an early affinity for music, that turned into her life long passion. She was married for nearly 60 years to Myron A. "Corky" Gill who predeceased her in 2010. She proudly raised three children, Patricia Gill Laycock (John) of Leesburg, VA, Kenneth Gill (Michele) of Stuart, FL, and Donald Gill of Portsmouth, VA. She and her family were extremely proud that after her children were raised she went back to college and completed a B.A in Music and Humanities from Virginia Wesleyan College, Magna Cum Laude, at the age of 53. She performed in Europe, at Carnegie Hall, and was very involved with the Virginia Beach United Methodist Church choir. Corky's job and her academic career gave her the opportunity to visit much of Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean which she greatly enjoyed. In addition to her children she is survived by brothers Harold and Bill Thompson, both of Michigan; grandchildren Micki Laycock (Jason) of Ashburn, VA, Brian Laycock (Connie), of Dumont, NJ; Summer Gill of Stuart, Fl; and great-grandchildren Owen and Eden Laycock. A memorial service will be held at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church on September 28th, 2018 at 4:00 pm. The family asks that donations be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation and the Virginia Wesleyan Choral Tour Support Fund (www.vwu.edu/giving/make-a-gift.php and list Margaret E. Gill under "Tribute Information.") in lieu of flowers.

Privileged to know both Margaret and Corky. Saddened for the family to lose their Matriarch. I visited a handful of times with Ken, their son, in the seventies, both in Va. Beach and in Ashland, Va. Margaret was all about music, and I wish I had had the foresight to tap that mine of knowledge. I could have learned so much that would have enhanced my enjoyment of listening and playing music. She passed on a nice legacy of love for performing to her two sons, which continues to this day. This is the way she remains with us in spirit. RIP, Margaret.

I will never forget what a sweet person she was, and a very intelligent and gifted musician. Her piano playing was superb. She was kind enough to be my accompanist for my college entrance audition, which I successfully passed. We recorded the Hindemith Sonata for Flute and Piano. She was such a blessing to everyone who knew her. RIP Margaret. You will be missed. Condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to her family. Mac McCluer (George back then)
