Marjorie Wilson Obituary

Marjorie Nock Wilson

Virginia Beach - Marjorie Nock Wilson, wife of deceased James (Jimmie) Foulk Wilson, passed away in her sleep on December 7, 2013. Mrs. Wilson, or Marge, was born in Delaware, the daughter of Wilbur F. Nock and Evelyn May Osmond. Marge graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond, and in 1941 the University of Delaware where she majored in French and Spanish. Most people today think only of men as being members of the "Greatest Generation," or if they do consider women at all the muscle-flexing Rosie the Riveter type, but many college-educated women, including Marge were recruited for the War effort. Shortly after graduation she received a telegram requesting the service of her language skills for the U.S. Office of Censorship, which reviewed all incoming mail to the country. Miss Nock was assigned to the Miami branch office, and many years later would write two books about this period of her life. The first, Dear Jimmie, Dearest Marge (2006), was a collection of the letters she exchanged with future husband Jimmie who was then in training to become a B-25 pilot. (He passed away in 2003 less than a month shy of what would have been their 50th wedding anniversary). Marge's second book, Uncensored! Adventures in the U.S. Office of Censorship (2008), was a more light-hearted account of the various escapades she had during 1942 in Miami.

In 1948 Marge and Jimmie moved to Norfolk where they raised a family and became active members of the community. During the 1960s, Mrs. Wilson returned to a professional career, teaching French at the Graham School for Girls and later at Old Dominion University. Marge and Jimmie later moved to Virginia Beach where they joined the Princess Ann Country Club, and enjoyed many games of golf there. Marge also was an accomplished duplicate bridge player, having collected an impressive number of master points over the years. Finally, for many years Marge enjoyed being an active member of Alliance Francaise. As recently as 2012, she hosted a Bastille Day party at First Colonial Inn where she had lived since 2009.

Marge Wilson is survived by her three children, Elizabeth (Betsy) Atkinson and husband Sam Scott; James (Jeff) Foulk, Jr. and wife Debbie; Marjorie (Midge) Lee, and five grandchildren, Page Atkinson Miyares, Clay Atkinson, and John Atkinson, Laura Wilson, and James Wilson, III, as well as five great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Elaina, & Sophia Miyares; Rachel Atkinson, and Andrew Wilson. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday December 21 at First Colonial Inn, 845 First Colonial Road. Donations may be sent to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
