Martha Potter Dewing

Chesapeake - Martha Potter Dewing, 86, died in her home on March 6, 2016 surrounded by family. Born in Cincinnati, OH, she was a graduate of Louisville Collegiate School and met her husband of 56 years while earning her degree at Connecticut College. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who later in life committed herself to numerous volunteer causes military officers' wives clubs, her children's schools, the AAUW, the Portsmouth Museums, and preserving the natural state of the Chesapeake Bay. She supported the education of her family, was an avid bridge player, and was active in numerous garden clubs.

She was predeceased by her husband, CDR Bruce W. Dewing; parents, John and Adele Potter; and sister and brother-in-law, Joan Potter Bickel and Henry D. Bickel. She is survived by her three sons Douglass, Andrew, and Henry; daughters-in-law Christine, Mary, and Sarah; twelve grandchildren; and many devoted family members and friends. The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Barbara Lawton, a friend and companion to both Bruce and Martha over the past decade. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Elizabeth River Project or the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Foundation. A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 21 at 11AM in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk.
