Mary Peris Obituary
After graduating from University of Lynchburg, she pursued a nursing career and attended Norfolk General School of Nursing, becoming an R.N. working in home health, area hospitals, CHKD, and finally, school nurse at Olive Branch Elementary School in Portsmouth.
Mary was also a major in the Army Reserves. She loved her church and staying in touch with her college friends. Mary loved to help others and volunteered feeding and housing the homeless. She loved the mountains and was the camp nurse at Craig Springs for many years.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, William and Viola (Moore) Whitehurst, and her sister-in-law, Lois (Umburger) Whitehurst. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 21 years, Anthony M. Peris; brother, Bill Whitehurst; nephews, Allen and Tod Whitehurst and their families; and many cousins in the California area.
A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Mark Poindexter on Saturday, November 13 at 11:00am at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association or to West Side Christian Church, 535 Cherokee Rd, Portsmouth, VA 23701.

Please accept our condolences for Mary´s death. Andrea and I remember her fondly as a welcoming presence in worship when we joined West Side six or seven years ago. She was always happy to see us and she thanked me warmly for my sermons when I preached regularly before we called Pastor Mark. Mary is in eternity now. May God comfort you and give you peace. Uwe
