I only just found out today that Dr Tignor had passed. Such sad news. I met him several years ago while he treated a bad infection I had, and I was so impressed by him as a doctor, as a professional, and as a human being, he was unforgettable. As insanely busy as he was, he took the time to help me with an issue that didn't even have to do with my infection, that was troubling me at the time. I've been to many doctors, and he truly epitomizes what a medical doctor should be. Thank you, Dr Tignor

I was a patient of Dr. Timor a couple of times. I was just in vbgh inpatient with an infected foot and the hospital infectious disease doctor there, told me about Dr. Tiger and his passing. I cried my eyeballs out just a few hours before for surgery.
Dr. Timor was such a sweet person. I love all his bowties. He always knew how to make you feel better. He never liked to be touched by his patients but I'd always hug him lol. I'm so sorry that he is no longer here but he's not in pain anymore. Rest easy Dr. Timor and thank you for caring for all of us

My deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Dr Tignor. I shed a tear as finished reading the letter sent by Beth. I may have only known him for a short time but he made quite an impression on me . I will forever remember him as one of the most caring doctors I have ever met in my life. It's not just me that feels that way, it's so many patients that do and that is why you will be missed so greatly. Rest easy now Doc

I was so sad to receive the letter today, Dr. Tignor changed my daughters life when she was misdiagnosed with HIV and bawling in his office. He took the time to review her record thoroughly when he realized her OBGYN failed to use the appropriate test specific to identify the disease. He ordered every blood test under the sun to prove to her she was healthy. He saved her life.

Dr. Tignor was one of the most amazing human beings I had ever had the optimist to cross paths with. Dr. Tignor literally saved my life a few times while I fought my cancer. He was always able to put a smile on my face no matter how awful I felt. His honestly, integrity and intelligence were both remarkable and genuine. I will miss his bow ties and glasses while he ran around from hospital room to hospital room or exam room to exam room. He definitely will be sorely missed by me and my family. I wouldnt be alive today without the care of Dr. Tignor and I can never thank God enough for him. Prayers always to Beth and the family. Fly high Dr. Tignor and thank you.

Dear family of Dr. Tignor,

I wanted to express my deepest condolences to your family.

I met the Good Doctor with his bowtie , at 4 am in my hospital bed.
I have to say he was a truly fine doctor for me. Of all of the infectious disease specialist I have seen over the years , he was a one of kind.
Funny thing, I was going to start working on a sculpture for him, he asked me about it last we spoke in spring of this year.
I pray your family will carry him into your lives each and every day.
He loved you all so much, he will be missed greatly.

I am extremely sad that Matt has died. He was classmate with me in first EVMS class of 1976 and I remember him very fondly as compassionate young man deeply interested in medicine but caring and thoughtful to our fellow classmates and to his patients as well. He sat across from me in the study booth at Smith Rogers Hall at EVMS and I must admit it was fun being with him since we shared lot of conversations on medicine, medical school, relationships, and even automobiles. We were internal medicine residents at EVMS postgraduate training from 1976-1979, and we were the first internal medicine residents to rotate at the new Leigh Memorial Hospital and we felt very honored that we were representing our school there. Matt came to my wedding with his bowtie and Virginia Military Institute coat and neat straw hat. He looked impressive. I had a chance to meet him last year at our reunion and even though he knew had a malignancy that was potentially fatal, he inspired me with his determination and hope in spite of this illness. He always had a warm smile and I had a chance to meet his wonderful family.

For me Matt was a embodiment what a physician should be: dedication to his work, friendliness and empathy with his patients, excellence at his work, and humor and caring and warmth and kindness with his colleagues, friends, and family.

I sadly will miss Matt and wish heartfelt condolences to his wonderful family. I will cherish my memories of Matt.

I had known Dr. Tignor (Matt) from yester-years of Piedmont Flight School when he was training for his advanced instrument rating in his Saratoga airplane. After many years, I saw him again, last year, as his patient getting tested due to a tick bite. He was so excited when I offered to take his teenage son, Jack, in a glider. This summer Matt and Jack joined Tidewater Soaring Society as family members, on the spot, after I took Jack for a short flight in the PW6 glider.

World has lost a caring physician, enthusiastic pilot, and a passionate Mensch.

We, in the Hampton Roads flying community, will be missing him dearly.

As a new home health rep in 2005, I was taken under the wing of Matt and Beth tignor who helped me become successful and also became instrumental in my life. It was the way they cared about their patients and the dedication they showed even through the duration of Matt's illness. He always kept his spirits up and tried to encourage his patients and still wanted to treat his patients even when he was sick himself. A hero! A calling from God that he did very well and took very seriously! Beth, you know I am here for you and anything that you or your children need at any time of day. we've had many talks about this but I will reiterate that you can call me at anytime. I mean that! We'll be with him again one day :-) Love you

In my 30+ years of being an infectious disease patient, Dr Tignor was one of the best there is. My heart goes out to Beth as well as the rest of the family, I will be eternally grateful for his compassion and drive to help me find answers for myself and many, many others. It is a sad day for our community.

I am very sorry to hear of the death of Dr. Matthew Tignor. As a classmate in the first class of 1976 at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Matt was destined to become a great and compassionate physician. It was good to see Matt at our most recent medical school class reunion, and his courage facing his own medical condition was inspiring to his classmates. My heartfelt condolences go to his wife and family.....he will be greatly missed but will live on in the hearts of his family, patients, nurses, doctors and fellow members of the Charter Class of 1976 at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

My heart aches for Dr Tignor's family and all of his Sentara friends and family. Dr Tignor was a man that would stop no matter how busy he was or how he was feeling just to ask me, "hey Gina, how are ya? How's the nausea?" I always would say I was doing well and that I no longer had nausea because I could not complain of some nausea when he never complained during his fight. He loved to talk to me about the trips he and his family would take and always took the time to listen about my family trips. I will forever cherish the vials he gave me to keep my meds in and our talks off vacations. Rest peacefully my friend!

Sweetest, kindest, best smelling man in the hospital. He never failed to greet you with a warm smile, and a strong hug. I am so sorry for his families pain and wish they find some happiness in all their memories of him. He always wore a bowtie, kind smile, and great glasses that brought joy to his patients. I'm going to miss him immensely.

Matt and I went to Cox together and he was always making you laugh. When I had my accident in 2008, Matt became one of many Doctors that I had during those 10 months of being in the hospitals, and he always came to check on me no matter what hospital I was in next. I remember him coming to see me at Bayside Hospital one day and I was feeling really low and he sat and talked to me and give me such encouragement to keeping on pushing myself to walk again, we cried together but he made me laugh again. Thanks for being there as a friend and Doctor. You will always be missed and God Bless your family.

Beth and children,
The last time I saw the doc he showed me a picture of his son with this huge turkey his son had shot.
Matt teared up and said that was one of his proudest days. I was honored that he shared this with me. His love was unending, his integrity to his family and patients unsurpassed. He was a great man and one hell of a friend. With love,
