Sharon, so sorry to hear about Mercer. In his memory I purchased amendments and tilled a garden for a family who recently became unemployed. We dedicated the garden to him. Hopefully, this will help feed them during some rought time. I know this would have pleased him. I loved Mercer, he was a great person (kid)

To the entire Oast family,
This came as such a shock, especially after having just lost Judge Oast...one of my favortie people. The Oast family and my family have been friends for over 60 years.
Mercer and I are the same age and I am thankful I was able to see him recently. He has a lovely family with Sharon and the girls, and they certainly will have many wonderful family memories to share and keep close always.
Thinking of you and keeping you all in my prayers and thoughts.

Dear Sharon, Katherine and Courtney,
Sharon, I do not know if you remember me from AC I pledged Sig Ep spring 79. I guess you and Mercer graduated that spring. Even though it was a short time, I still remember ya'll like it was yesterday. You two helped me make my mind up to pledge Sig Ep. Mercer always had something going on but it was never a doubt he have much he loved his sweetheart or her him. Girls, your Mama is one of the kindness persons I have ever met. I'm sorry I lost touch over the years. Seems Mercer was quite the outsdoorsman which surprised me but then again I only new him from AC. Sharon, there are no words I can print or say that I feel would adequately express my sorry for you and the girls in Mercer sudden passing. I can only pray for you all. I pray God will comfort you, strengthen you, give you peace, give you an abounding love for each other and the hope of an joyful reunion one day. Sharon, if you ever need help, I am only a call away.

Dear Sharon, Katherine and Courtney,
David and I are still in shock over the news about Mercer. Oh how we loved him! He was the closest family I ever had in Elizabeth City. He will never know how much it meant for me to have someone I grew up with and knew as a child in the same town with me. It was so special for me to visit with him and we would talk about our times growing up in Portsmouth and all the people we knew.
Just to be in Mercer's presence would make me laugh and put a smile on my face. David has been lost since you all moved because Mercer would fix anything and everything. He even helped with the boys school projects!!
There is no man on earth who adored his wife and his two beautiful daughters more than Mercer. I cannot imagine the void and emptiness all of you are experiencing. Please feel comforted that we all love you and we are lifting you up in prayer daily.

Sharon, Katherine, and Courtney,
I am so sorry to have heard heard about Mercer. I was lucky to have had him as a friend and sailing buddy and will always remember how much fun we had racing "Utmoast", or as Mercer called it, "Ultimate Oast" together years ago. He has brought happiness to the lives of so many, and for that I am thankful to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you. We will miss him.

Mercer was one of my favorite people at the bank. There are so many things that will be missed like how he would stop and chat or joke whenever he walked by or just walk in my office and start playing with something on my bookshelf without asking. Every time I spoke with or saw Mercer I was either laughing or smiling, even it was just seeing him in those crazy bow ties he liked to wear. I keep thinking about the time he let me borrow his truck to do some errands for the bank. He will be missed.

He truly loved his family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

I was saddened to hear the loss of Mercer. I was fortunate to meet the Oast family on vacation at the Outer Banks. Every year we would get to visit with Mercer, Sharon, Katherine and Courtney. My granddaughters grew up with all the kids who vacationed the same time at Corolla from year to year. I remember Mercer with a big smile on his face and an interesting story to tell. Always friendly and talkative, with energy to spare was typical Mercer. My thoughts are with Sharon, Katherine, Courtney and family.

To Sharon and your entire family, I cannot express our family’s heartfelt feeling we have for you and your family. You are all in our prayers. I always liked to be in the presence of Mercer. I loved how he would ineract with and rib my son Teddy. He would always give him a tough time when we were together at various Rotary functions; like getting down and dirty in a creek during a Greensboro Clean Sweep; or while working at Camp Carefree. I think he liked to give Teddy and other boys a tough time as it was his guy thing, a way he could tease and be tougher than he was to his daughters who he loved and talked about so often. Mercer, hearing that Teddy has a Kayak, offered to help Teddy with his kayak training sometime this next summer. Teddy shared my joy of being around Mercer. We always liked hearing Mercer’s quips, quotes and instantaneous responses, often sarcastic, but always in fun, to whatever topic being discussed, and to whoever was there. Mercer was one of our Gate City Rotary Club's shining lights at every Rotary meeting I attended. He recently met with me in his office on a Saturday morning, graceiously providing sound advice and counseling in these troubling times. Mercer will be truly be missed by all.

Cathy and I send our deepest sympathy. Mercer was my best friend, from elementary school to playing on the river with Mrs Oast always keeping an eye on us to make sure we were safe. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Mercer Oast. I didn't know him well personally, however, he was the little brother of one of my best childhood friends, Marty Oast. Always, little Merci was lurking around as we would be doing our girl things. I do remember Marty saying he had met the girl of his dreams and all was going well for him and his family. Oast Family,
My most deepest sympathies to you all for the loss of Mercer. I had the great pleasure of getting to know him over the last five years as the loan officer at Carolina Bank who provided oversight to Piedmont Land Conservancy and the Guilford Battleground Company for projects at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. But I knew from day one working with Mercer that he was so much more than that. I greatly enjoyed our conversations as he inquired about land trust conservation work and I found out about his outdoor interests and pursuits. Our conversations always moved quickly away from business to personal interests and I knew that I was speaking with a real friend. Mercer will be greatly missed and I feel I am a much better person for having known him. Again my most heartfelt condolences to you all.
March 31, 2009
Mercer, no words can speak about how your Carolina Bank friends are feeling right now. We have lost a family member and we so miss your daily rounds with comments that without a doubt cheer us up! (though may confuse us as well!!!!) But as we say . . . . that's MERCER! We are consoling one another because we realize you were such an imprint, example,in all of our daily lives. Full of earnest compassion for each one of us and other living things. We love you Mercer and look forward to seeing you in heaven above, and pray for Sharon, Katherine and Courtney.
Put in a good word for me up there. I am hoping I am riding the escalator versus the stairs.

I am so happy to have known Mercer. He was such a unique and wonderful personality. I not only enjoyed the fun that he brought to each camping trip, but also the stories that he told about his family. He was so proud of his daughters and I learned quite a lot about lacrosse during our conversations on and off the river. I recall a post on our club site a couple of years ago, where Mercer advised everyone to be with their children every chance they could. As a father of two young boys, that advice resonated with me and I haven't forgotten it. Mercer ended that message with the post script "Currently the Western Guilford Girl's Lacrosse Team is ranked # 1
in the state!!!" He truly was a very proud husband and father. You are all in my thoughts and I'm very sorry for your loss.

Ol' Mercer--you will be missed! Everyone at Miller Vision knows Mercer and knew there would be a story with every visit he made to our office. Sometimes he would just stop in after getting a Red Bull at the BP--like he needed more energy! We have missed being "Mercer'ed" at the bank since he moved downtown (that's where you got stopped by him and his sense of humor and it took you 20 minutes to make a deposit at the bank and everyone at work wondered what took so long just making a deposit!!) I'm so glad I got to know him. He was a joy to be around and I know he will be missed by every one that he came into contact with. I pray that God brings peace and comfort into your lives. We are all better for having known such a funny, caring, fun-loving guy!

Mercer was a great college friend with my brother at ACC. It was such a funny pleasure to have him in our home. The lyrics for Toys'R'Us remind me of him, I don't want to grow up...I am glad he left us doing something he loved. We should celebrate his life of crazy antics and just know that God probably needed to spread some silly cheer in heaven and called him to serve!! Hoping the family can smile back at him in the future and know he is crazily smiling at you! Your loss is heavens gain. You are in my prayers.

My heart goes out to Sharon, Katherine,Courtney and Family. Mercer was a great guy, that's all there is to it! He was full of life, often exuberant in a child-like way, with more zest for life than two people. He could get you excited just talking about one of his adventures. We were fortunate to meet the wonderful Oast Family on vacation at the Outer Banks where his mother and father owned a condominium. Mercer was a ton of fun. I loved talking with him because he was interested in everything and knowledgeable about so many subjects-or at least enough to carry on an lively conversation. All the members of the Smith River Valley Canoe Club will hold him in our hearts for as long as we live.

I am deeply sadden by the loss of such a great man. I always told him, "You are not my banker, you are my friend", and that is the way he treated everyone. I will miss his random calls to "CHECK IN" just to talk. Anyone who knew Mercer was lucky and blessed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Mercer will be missed but never forgotten!

Sharon, katherine & Courtney, we are truly sorry over the loss of Mercer. Over the years we have shared many great times cruising the highways and byways as well as social gatherings. Mercer was a man of power and compassion and will be missed by all. God Bless, Love, Ralph & Lynn

Sharon,
I am so very sorry about your loss. Mercer was a truly unique individual. He never failed to make everybody laugh. I last saw him at his father's funeral a couple of months ago and we reminisced about how much fun we had growing up and going on boat trips. We both agreed it was some of the best times of our lives. I will always treasure my memories of Mercer.

Mercer and I would often talk fly fishing and woodworking while at motorcycle club functions. He was diverse and talented and a first class person.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family and he will be missed.
