Paul Hughes Obituary

Paul H. Hughes PORTSMOUTH - Paul Hayward Hughes, 81, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011. A native of Huntington, W.Va., his family relocated to Virginia in the early 1940s. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence G. and Vevia M. Hughes; brothers, Clarence L. and Jack R. Hughes; and sister, Betty H. Martin. A 1948 graduate of Churchland High School, Paul went on to serve three years in the U.S. Air Force. Upon his return from the service, he worked briefly at Seaboard Railroad but dreamed of owning a floral business. His dream was fulfilled when he opened Hughes Florist in 1954, which he successfully operated for 44 years until his retirement in 1998. While in the floral business he served as President for FTD, Teleflora and Southern Retail Florists. During this time he won many awards as Virginia's top designer. He was a member of Simonsdale Presbyterian Church. While attending high school, he met the love of his life, Margaret B. Boyd, and they became faithful companions for more than 65 years. Also surviving are a niece, Missy Lippiatt and husband Bob; and a great-nephew, Kyle, all of Portsmouth. A funeral will be held Friday, Feb. 25, at 1 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. www.SturtevantFuneralHome.com.

Dearest Aunt Margaret~~We know how much you will miss Uncle Paul, a true loss for you as the two of you have been the most inseparable loving twosome for years on end. I know how much time and loving committment that you spent caring for him as I watched you during my lengthy stay in Ptown this past year while caring for my Dad, your dear brother Billy Boyd. And as you know Dad was waiting to show Paul the way into the gates of heaven so that he would be at peace and have that great REUNION we all have been speaking of. You cared for Uncle Paul in many, many ways and he for you. Take comfort in knowing he is at peace and as you would tell him "I love you" and in return he would say "I love you more." GOD Bless you~~Love Teresa..

Dear Missy, Bob, & Kyle,
Thinking of all of you at this time. Paul is gone in body but not in spirit. He has touched so many people near and far during their happiest times and during their sad times with his floral creations. Paul has been an inspiration and mentor to many in his lifetime and his legacy lives on in their words and works. May you all be comforted in remembrances of him, his smiling eyes and funny stories that you shared. His love lives on forever in your hearts. Your neighbors & friends, Shelba & Tom

Dear Margaret, I know that words alone cannot heal the hurt you are feeling for the loss of your beloved Paul, however I hope that knowing that you are being thought of and prayed for by so many who love and care for you will in some way begin the healing. You and all your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May peace be with you. Love, Donna

I did not know Paul personally, but as a member of the board of Allied Florist Association, I know that he made his mark on the Hampton Roads Floral Industry and will be missed. The Board sends their thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.

We considered Paul one of our very good friends and also back door neighbor when he had his store in the Karps Pharmacy building.

Dear Cousin Margaret, so sorry for the loss of Paul. I know he was the "love of your life", and that you and Paul were together a lot of years. I am sorry I will not be able to be with you during the services to be held Friday. It has been a tough year for the Boyd Family. I will try to be in touch after you have had some rest. Please take care of yourself. Love, Mary Louise
