Virginia Beach - Phoebe (Foo) Withers Field, 91, died on November 19, 2012 at Sentara Hospital in Virginia Beach.
Foo was born and raised in Suffolk, VA, with summers in Biltmore, N.C. She was the youngest child of the late John Thornton Withers and Phoebe Jones Withers.
As an infant, she was named "Foo" by her 16 month older sister, Dorris, who had trouble pronouncing "Phoebe" and she has been known by that name, with affection, ever since. She graduated from St. Mary's High School and Junior College in Raleigh, N.C. and attended Mary Baldwin College. She was an avid sportswoman throughout her school years and well into her adult life. Basketball, field hockey, volley ball, tennis and golf were all a part of her resume of athletic pursuits. She was a long time member of Princess Anne County Club. She was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. She was an energetic, friendly, garrulous woman who never met a stranger.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Henry Callendar Field, Jr., a son, Peter Jones Field, two sisters, Sarah Withers Shelley and Mary Taylor Withers Birdsong, and a brother, William Jones Withers. She is survived by a sister, Dorris Emmy Withers McNeal of Virginia Beach; by two sons: Henry C. (Rusty) Field III and wife Nancy of Johnson City, TN and Thornton Withers (Whit) Field and wife Andy of Alexandria, VA; by a daughter, Phoebe Field Carlopio of Australia; by 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the Holy Trinity Chapel at Westminster-Canterbury at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 24, 2012. Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. H.
