Richard Bernarde Obituary

Captain Richard Lee Bernarde, Sr., USMC, RET, 78, of Chesapeake, went peacefully to be with the Lord on July 8, 2023.

Ret. Capt. Bernarde was born in Bowler, Wisconsin and graduated from Loveland High School in Colorado. After declining seven full scholarships to universities to play football, Richard chose to serve his country and enlisted in the USMC in 1963 upon graduation from high school. Richard was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in Irvine, CA where he met his future wife, Marlene Young, a fellow marine. Richard and Marlene started a family, and Richard began the first of two tours of Vietnam. Capt. Bernarde retired in 1984 after 21 years in the USMC and began a second career with BAE Systems as a logistics analyst until 2004.

Richard is predeceased in death by his parents, John Theodore Bernarde and Ann Probst Bernarde, and his wife, Marlene Bernarde. Left to cherish his memory are his family, son, Richard L. Bernarde, Jr., daughters April M. Bernarde and Tanya A. Ward, and, son-in-law, Aaron Ward. Richard loved the Lord, his family and his country. Semper fidelis.

A graveside service will be held at a future date when family and friends are able to gather at the family cemetery in Norton, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Wounded Warrior Project.
