Richard Hendricks Obituary

Richard LeRoy (Dick) Hendricks Jr., 91, of Greensboro, N.C., passed away Dec. 18 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Doris Bozeman (Dot) Hendricks, of the home; son R. Michael Hendricks (Susan) of Charlotte; grandson R. Tyler Hendricks of Charlotte and Brooklyn, NY; granddaughter JoAnna H. Brown (Jack) of Portsmouth, Va.; and two great grandchildren, Jason Brown and Jalene Brown of Portsmouth, Va. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard L. Hendricks, Sr. and Bertha Strickland Hendricks; daughter Terri Anne Hendricks and sister JoAnn Rue. Dick was born Nov. 5, 1931, in Elizabeth City, N.C., to Richard L. Hendricks Sr. and Bertha Strickland Hendricks. Known as Roy while he was growing up, Dick later moved to Portsmouth, Va., where he attended Woodrow Wilson High School and was a three-sport athlete who excelled at football, baseball and track. After receiving multiple scholarship offers in football, he attended Mississippi State University. He returned to Portsmouth to be close to Dot, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. Dick then pursued his dream of playing professional baseball. He signed with the Washington Senators and played in their farm club system before being drafted into the U.S. Army. He married Dot on July 10, 1952, and they remained together for more than 70 years. After the Army, Dick began working as an accountant for the Waller and Woodhouse accounting firm in Norfolk, Va. He was hired by Landmark Communications as the assistant controller for the Virginian-Pilot and its sister newspaper, the Ledger-Star, in Norfolk, Va. Landmark transferred him to Greensboro to be vice president and assistant general manager of the Greensboro News & Record. He later served as president of Trader Publishing, which he grew into Landmark Target Media before his retirement. In Greensboro, Dick became an avid golfer and spent many happy hours at Forest Oaks Country Club and the Cardinal Golf & Country Club. He was quite proud of his four holes-in-one. Dick supported a number of charitable causes and was a staunch supporter of several veteran organizations. He loved animals of all kinds. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the SPCA of the Triad or to the War Memorial Foundation/Carolina Field of Honor. The family would like to thank Gloria Phillips of Walkertown, N.C., for her devoted care of Dick and Dot. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 28 at the Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, 5926 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro. A funeral service, open to visitors, will follow in the funeral home chapel and officiated by Rick Byrd, Senior Pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Burial will be at Westminster Gardens, 3601 Whitehurst Rd., Greensboro, immediately after the service. Online condolences may be made at www.forbisanddick.com.

I knew Dick and Dot for many years and truly enjoyed an exceptional professional business relationship. Dick and I played many golf rounds over the years, and enjoyed each of them. Great guy.

Rod and I lived next door to Dot and Dick at The Cardinal and played lots of golf with them. We´ve been gone quite a while but have tried to keep up with them through different friends.
The obit was correct when it mentions Dot was the love of Dick´s life. God bless you both!
