Richard Marilley Obituary

Richard Francis Marilley, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at his home in Virginia Beach, VA on Oct. 1, 2021. He was predeceased by his parents, Ralph Joseph Marilley and Marie Gilligan Marilley; brothers, James and Edward; and son, Michael.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; daughter, Rachelle; son, Stephen (Leanne, deceased); grandsons, Aidan and Grant; brother, Dr. Ralph Joseph; sister, Marjorie Ann Ransom; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was born on April 3, 1932, and grew up in Croghan, New York of which he was always fond of telling childhood stories of adventures in the cold northern country. He grew up working in the family store, E.M. Marilley & Company, and attended Father Leo Memorial School. He then attended Georgetown University and Law School and dedicated his career to the Federal Government as an attorney for The General Services Administration and FEMA.

On Oct. 10, 1959, Richard married Joan Adele Linderman in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Washington D.C., and together they enjoyed 62 years of marriage. Living most of their years in McLean, VA, where they had many friends and fond memories and loved to entertain. An avid sports fan and especially of the San Francisco Giants, formerly the New York Giants up until 1957, as well as the Washington Redskins and Georgetown Hoyas and Washington Bullets Basketball.

He enjoyed cooking and his specialty and favorite to make for others was his infamous "Johnny Cake". He retired in 1993 and he and his wife moved to Bonita Springs, FL, where they lived for 26 years. There he enjoyed tennis, boating and collecting shells on the beach. In 2019, they moved back to VA to be close to family.
