Robert Powers Obituary

An old sailor has crossed the bar. CDR Robert L. (Bob) Powers, USN (Ret.), 80, passed away peacefully on October 10. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late Lawrence R. and Audrey B. Powers and grew up in Franklin, VA.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sue; daughters Jennifer Kane (Shaun) of Knotts Island, NC and Megan Dosher (James) of Apex, NC, and the joy of his life, grandchildren Rowan and Larry Dosher and Nora and Meara Kane. Other survivors include his sisters Linda (Mike) Critzer and Susan (Jim) Vosters as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bob was a graduate of the US Naval Academy, class of 1964, the Naval Postgraduate School, and the Naval War College. He served in uniform for 25 years and had the privilege of commanding four ships and the experience of serving three years in the Pentagon. Following his first retirement, he taught for the Naval War College as an Adjunct Professor of National Security Affairs for another 25 years. He was also a partner in a small defense contracting firm focusing on information operations.

He was passionate about community service, especially as a member of the Great Bridge Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis International. He served as Lt. Governor, then Governor of his Kiwanis District. He also was active in Meals on Wheels, a long-standing member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, and a docent at the Great Bridge Battlefield Park, which enabled him to pursue his life-long love of learning and research. Bob relished his family, shipmates, and students. Bob was also a rabid Navy football fan.

Bob's family is grateful for the compassionate care he received from the staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. They are especially thankful to Fernando Torres, caretaker and treasured friend.

Bob wished that those who knew him not mourn his passing but rejoice in the times they shared.

H. D. Oliver is handling arrangements. The family will hold a private service at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 233 Mann Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23322, or the Great Bridge Battlefield & Waterways Museum, 1775 Historic Way, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Sue, I was so sad to read of Bob´s passing. He and I had been emailing in September re our HS reunion on October 1st and I had promised to send pictures and give him a report, which I did on October 3rd, but never heard back. I didn´t realize he was so close to death. He was very missed on October 1st and forever will be. What a wonderful guy you were married to! I hope you can take comfort in that. My sincere condolences for your loss.
