Roger G. Pyle VIRGINIA BEACH - Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Roger G. Pyle died peacefully in his home April 25, 2011. He was born July 13, 1933 in Texas and raised in Oklahoma City by his parents, Mary and Louie Pyle. During his early years, Roger spent his summers on his grandmother's cattle ranch in Texas running around barefoot and riding the horses bareback. He attended the University of Tulsa for two years before joining the U.S. Navy as an aviator. He later earned a B.A. in government from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. Roger served our country for more than 22 years flying many different aircraft, most notably seaplanes and P-3s. He was a combat decorated Naval Aviator, flying numerous missions in Vietnam and around the world. Roger launched his second career as a real estate broker and was a co-founder of Pyle Realty Inc. with his wife Alice. He was also a certified appraiser and mediator. Roger enjoyed many years and countless rounds of golf at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club with his close friends in the Retired Men's Golf Group. He was a very active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder, Stephen Minister and chairman of the Community Outreach Committee. Above all, it was his strong Christian faith that allowed him to navigate this life as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Alice G. Pyle. He is survived by his daughter Pamela Pyle, M.D., and her husband Daniel Unger, M.D., and their children Zack and Ali Unger; and his son, Allen Pyle and his wife Diane and their children Nathan, Catherine and David Pyle. A visitation service will be held at Holloman-Brown Great Neck Chapel, today, April 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A funeral will be held Friday, April 29, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church 300 36th St., in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mary Meyer-Alice Pyle Memorial Nursing Scholarship c/o Dr. Pamela Pyle - 1304 Kingfisher Court Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
