Rolf F. Noll

Virginia Beach - Rolf F. Noll, retired Naval Officer, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on Sept. 12, 2016 in Alameda, CA with his daughter and grandchildren by his side.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1933 in New York City to the late Paul & Rosa Noll and raised in Lynbrook, Long Island. He graduated from Lynbrook High School in 1950 & from Jr. College at Long Island Agriculture & Technical Institute in 1953. Rolf entered US Naval Flight Trainging in 1953 in Pensacola. He was commissioned as an Ensign and designated as a naval aviator after completing flight training in 1955. He then married is high school sweetheart, Mary Jane Harrington from Lynbrook, NY.

Rolf spent the next 2yrs as an instructor in Pensacola. Afterwards, Rolf & Jane proceeded to Moffett Naval Air Station. He joined Fighter Squadran 213, flying F4D (SKYRAYS), where he accumulated over 200 carrier landings on the USS Lexington (CVA 16). Rolf then went to Monterey, CA where he attended 2yrs of college, receiving a B.S. degree in 1962, in meteorology. Rolf spent 3yrs on shore duty at NAS, Sanford, FL, acting as the Station Weather Officer and flying Navy R4D & C117 aircraft. Rolf went to VF 101 in Key West and trained in F4B Phantoms; after which, he joined the VF14 Top Hatters. Rolf Completed 2 Mediterranean cruises and 1 combat cruise to Vietnam aboard the USS Roosevelt. There he accumulated 220 carrier landings and flew 75 combat missions. He then returned to VF 101 Det. Oceana as a flight instructor.

Rolf finished his naval career as a Navy Commander, and retired in 1982. After retiring, he went to work at Newport News Shipbuilding for the next 10yrs where, among other projects, he helped overhauling the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier. In his later years, Rolf served as a docent aboard the USS Hornet, passing on his knowledge of aircraft carrier landings and flying, which he enjoyed immensely.

Rolf is survived by his daughter, Janine Noll; son, Tom Noll; grandson, Joshua Noll; granddaughter, Amy Noll; brother, Col. Edward P. Noll; along with extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Tues., Sept. 27, 2016 from 6-8pm at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wed., Sept. 28, 2016 at 11am. Rolf will be laid to rest with his beloved wife Mary Jane at Princess Anne Memorial Park.
