Ross S. Olson

1932 - 2019

Captain Ross Stuart Olson, USN (ret.), passed on to his eternal home, Saturday, January 12, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Betty, and his parents, Hubert and Grace Langhoff Olson. Born February 8, 1932, he grew up in Bloomington, MN, and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1955. Ross served a distinguished 30-year career as a naval officer. Following his retirement, he served with Missions to Military for another 26 years. He was a faithful and beloved charter member of Colonial Baptist Church for 40 years. Ross influenced the hearts and lives of many people. Even as his health declined, he stayed engaged with others, pointing them to Christ. He is survived by his two brothers, Reid Olson (Sandy) and Craig Olson (Abby); three children, Matthew Olson (Diane), Laura Moore (French), and Martha Davey (Daniel); 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces and 1 nephew.A graveside service with full military honors will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Albert G. Horton, Jr. State Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Colonial Baptist Church, 2221 Centerville Turnpike, Virginia Beach. Visitation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Colonial Baptist Missionary Fund or Virginia Beach Theological Seminary.
