Shirley Harrell Obituary

Shirley Harrell, 86, died December 6, 2021. Shirley was born in Norfolk, VA to the late Robert Lee and Lessie Cowan Halstead. She graduated from Great Bridge High School in 1953. A member of Great Bridge UMC, Shirley loved music, playing the organ and Bridge. A passion for flower gardening led to owning and operating her own florist. Above all, Shirley's true passion was spending time with and caring for her family.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, George "Alvin" Harrell. Left to cherish her memory are her loving children, Susan Glisson (Britt) of Doswell, VA, Toni McKenna (Fred) of Chesapeake, and Wesley Peoples (Lori) of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Geoffrey (Ari), Andrew (Monica), Claire (Charlie), Emily, Kelly (Luke), Sarah, Paul (Taylor), Chelsea, and Trey (Jessica); great grandchildren, Cloe, JP, Lincoln, Jack, Beau, and Cooper; and a community of family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Chesapeake. A celebration of Shirley's life will be held on Friday at 2:00 pm at Great Bridge UMC with interment following at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Shirley was always around when I was growing up....at Uncle Lee´s house, visiting Aunt Lib or at the Murden home. I remember her well. Always welcoming and very caring with family and friends. Thank you, Shirley, for your "always kindness" and asking me to be a flower girl in your wedding and always remembering my mother. Love, Sandy
