Slade Phillips Obituary
Slade was born in Newton Grove, NC in 1921 and moved to Portsmouth at a very young age. He attended Wilson High School in the early 40s where he was an outstanding football player. He received a scholarship to the College of William and Mary to play football. After one football season he joined the Navy and spent WWII in the south pacific.
He came back to Portsmouth in 1946 when he was offered a scholarship to play football at East Carolina Teachers College by their coach Jim Johnson. He scored the first touchdown at ECTC. After the war he finished his education and returned to Portsmouth where he got a job teaching and coaching at Great Bridge High School. After one year he was moved to Churchland High School as asst. principal and asst. football coach. In 1954 he and shotgun brown coached the only undefeated, untied and unscored on team in the state.
In the fall of 1954 Slade was moved to Cradock Elementary as principal, that became Alf. J. Mapp Junior High where he was principal until he retired in 1977. Following retirement Slade and his wife Peggy spent many good years in Florida and Las Vegas until they returned to Portsmouth and lived on the waterfront downtown until his wife's passing in 2017. He then moved to Surry with his son.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Slade Phillips, his first wife Tilley Phillips and his second wife Peggy Kahler Phillips, two sisters Virginia and Billie, and three brothers James, John and Amos Phillips.
He is survived by his son Slade Phillips III, two grandchildren Slade Phillips IV and Jason Phillips, and several great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, November 29, 2021 at the Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum by Rev. Wilbur Kersey. Players from the 1954 undefeated Churchland High School football team will act as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Sunday, November 28 at the Sturtevant Funeral Home Portsmouth Blvd Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Court Street Baptist Church, 447 Court Street Portsmouth, VA 23704.
