Surendra Tiwari

Surendra Tiwari YORKTOWN - Dr. Surendra Tiwari, resident of Yorktown, passed away at 1:10 p.m., June 10, 2008. Dr. Tiwari was born and grew up in India where he received his early education, followed by two M.S. degrees from the University of Maine, and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York. Dr. Tiwari was a professor at Old Dominion University for 35 years where he became an eminent professor and was awarded the Morgan Professorship. He received numerous academic awards throughout his career. Dr. Tiwari was an internationally recognized leader in a broad range of engineering disciplines. He was recipient of numerous research grants and authored/coauthored more than 400 research publications and 10 books. He was inducted into the Department of Mechanical Engineering Hall of Fame at Old Dominion University. He mentored more than a 100 graduate students, more than 40 of whom received Ph.D. under his direction. He is survived by his wife, Surya Bansi Tiwari; a daughter, Meena and her husband; numerous family members in India; and a niece, Jaya Tiwari and her husband Michael McGovern of Yorktown. Dr. Tiwari created lasting friendships and touched many lives during his life. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. His family would like to especially thank Ms. Juanita Blue and Ms. Latrina Blue for providing unparalleled home care during his last years. A funeral will be held at noon today in Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel, 12746 Nettles Drive, Newport News, VA 23606. Family will receive friends at the family home, 406 Rock Creek Court, Yorktown, VA 23693, after the funeral until 7 p.m., 872-4981. Memorial donations may be made to the Old Dominion University Educational Foundation, 4417 Monarch Way, Norfolk, VA 23529 towards Tiwari Endowed Graduate Scholarship-Mechanical Engineering.
