Thomas Woodard Obituary

Thomas Woodard

Suffolk - Dr. Thomas Woodard, Orthodontist (lover of God, family, people, dogs, and fishing) sadly, has died. He was a funny, smiling, joyful man who forgave all offenses and never held a grudge. His children considered him the greatest father in the world, and his wife saw herself as an especially blessed, cared for wife. He was a supportive, loyal, dedicated friend. Each person Tom met thought he liked them best. Nieces and nephews all adored "Uncle Doc". In his office, Dr. Woodard teased his patients in braces and made them laugh. Growing up as the oldest of six boys, he was an example of leadership and responsibility. Throughout the years, his brothers continued to call him for guidance and advice. He also oversaw the care of his wife's younger sister, Vicki, who lives in a group home, treating her with friendship & kindness. Tom was a lover of the outdoors-a man who found enjoyment fishing in the lakes, rivers and oceans (of the world or in the Tidewater area) with close friends. He is survived by his wife Cheryl; children - Leslie Jill Woodard, Dr. Monica Ashley Woodard, and Nicholas Thomas Woodard. He also claimed as a daughter Kimberly Wrim, and had a loving goddaughter. He had five siblings: John Spruill, Joseph Spruill (deceased), Matthew Spruill, Dr. Linwood Spruiell, and Dr. Michael Spruiell. He is also survived by the wives of each brother and two other sisters-in-law. He had many beloved nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, and many friends who saw him as a brother. He respected and loved all who were employed in his orthodontic practices. Though humble, he was a man of many accomplishments. Graduating from high school at age 16, he entered the Army in 1967 with a degree in math from Norfolk State University.Tom served in the Special Forces during the Vietnam War era and obtained a master's degree in physics from Old Dominion University; he then worked as a NASA physicist at Langley AFB. Later, rejoining the military, he received his training in dentistry and orthodontics, retiring as a Colonel in 1999. After serving more than twenty years in the Army, he went into private practice, opening a total of four Woodard Orthodontics offices in both Virginia and North Carolina. He was joined by his daughter, Dr. Monica Woodard, in 2005, who will continue to run the practices. We will miss this beautiful man among men. The viewing will be held at Graves Funeral Home in Norfolk on Friday, August 17 from 1 to 6 PM. The memorial service will be Saturday, August 18. The time and location will be announced on Graves Funeral Home's website. gravesfuneralhomeinc.com

I just learned of Dr. Woodward’s passing. I worked for him as an assistant in his orthodontic practices, and he taught me so much about orthodontics and dentistry. He was brilliant, funny, kind, and generous to all. All will miss him. RIP, Dr. Woodward.

I've moved here from Illinois with my kids and learned they needed braces, that's when I meet Dr. Woodard!! he would laugh and joke with my boys and my little girl.. his atmosphere around the office will NEVER be the same as I learned today he has passed which caught me by surprise!

He was truly a good Dr. that are hard to find..
Go with God, you've earned your wings! You are in a place many Christians as myself can't even fathom! But can't wait to hear our Lord say Well done, my good and faithful servant, enter into the kingdom!
A heavenly place with our Lord!.

hopefully one day I will meet his daughter Monica..
blessings and love to the family.

To the family of Dr. Woodard, I just learned today of his passing. I'm deeply saddened because the world has truly lost a wonderful doctor. On my appointment days no matter how I was feeling walking into the office I was sure to leave with a smile or getting into my car and thinking about his sense of humor I would continue to laugh. Then the day came when he gave me the gift that I will always remember along with Dr. Monica, whom I meet later. This gift was to be able to walk away with a smile that I love each and everytime I look into the mirror or looking back at old photos which I never smiled much. Thank you Dr. Woodard, for leaving me a portion of your brilliant work.

Never will I forget,

Dr.Woodward will always hold a special place in our hearts. My daughter was fortunate to have him as her orthodontist at Greenbrier several years ago. Our hometowns in N. C. were 45 minutes apart, which we often talked and joked about. He was a Man of God, that displayed those traits in assisting children in need. May God comfort the family in such a difficult moment knowing "Weeping may endure for a night , but joy will come in the morning. Rejoice knowing, he made a difference in touching so many lives.
