David and Family,
We send our sympathy for this time of loss. I always enjoyed meeting with Bumps and looked forward to hearing his stories. His since of humor kept me laughing long after we had parted company. It takes time to work through a loss like this and Bumps wants you to smile as you remember him and keep enjoying life.
The Lord's peace and strength to all,
Lawton Baker

Deepest condolences to the Eberwine family on the passing of Bumps. He was a big part of my childhood memories growing up at the yacht club. A wonderful person.

Dave and Sherl, Our condolences to you and all of your family on Bumps's death. He was a true treasure to the Hampton Roads sailing community. Although we moved away years ago, whenever we returned, reconnecting with Bumps was a highlight of our visits.
A special memory, and contribution to our sport was that Bumps was a pioneer in accepting and encouraging women sailors (of course, he loved the ladies!), welcoming them aboard Sea Star and giving them real crew responsibilities.
He will be missed.

The Owens family sends condolences to the family for your loss. Mr. Eberwine was such a gracious person, and a real gentleman.
We raced Lasers together back in the 70's and he was a great competitor and always nice enough to offer any advice on how to be a better sailor.
Over all the years, he always had a smile.
The sailing community has lost a wonderful friend.

Julie and Mark, and extended family. Amy and I just wanted to say that we were sorry to hear of your loss. Bumps was a figure in the community that can never be replaced which makes it even more special for those who knew him. May he rest in peace and yet carry on in small aspects of all those who were his family and friends.

Dear David, Sherl, Chuck and all the family. Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of Bumps. Bumps was so encouraging to us in our program and some years ago allowed me to crew for him on Spray. When David initiated the Adult Sailing Program and brought the Sonars to HYC I don't think Bumps could have been prouder. He even came out and sailed during a couple of team racing Thursdays to show his support! He was incredible. He will be so missed by so many.
Best personal regards,
Rose and Stocky Hobart

David, Chuck and family, I send my most sincere condolence at your loss. He loved you and was so proud of who you are. Bumps is One of a kind and will be missed by the Hampton Roads sailing community. I don't know a better sailor or one with a bigger heart. I'm only one of the many he mentored, encouraged and believed in. He loved racing, yet he put teaching ahead of winning...so often allowing novice crew to fly a spinnaker, offer an opinion or trim a jib in the midst of a race...and so many times, his belief won the race. I know that Graham has already met up with him in mariners' heaven. I imagine that they're sharing Chinese takeout, catching up on CCV gossip, fussing about their respective boats' repairs and reveling in the good old days. Bumps, you'll be missed. Thank you for all you gave to the sailing community. Fair winds and following seas. ♡
